AS I have said in another topic, I'm thinkin of gettin a MK4 Astra. seen a kit I like but it says its made from GRP fibreglass, Is this good or bad or what? help

Whats are the things to look out for when buying bumpers, spoilers, skirts etc, to make sure you don't buy inferior products?

Thanks

Waddi

GRP products are inferior to ABS. For instance, my kit is GRP(fibreglass) and if i was to crash it(again) the fibreglass splinters and breaks. This is very hard to repair and will cost a lot of money,Fibreglass may also snap clean in half, like it did on my first crash. Half my bumper was on the floor.

ABS however is plastic so a small dink will create a small scratch or it may just bounce bounce u away from what u rolled into.ABS is easier to repair, and they are made from a more accurate mould. GRP is made with resin and fibres of glass and plastic. The setting process of the finished article can cause imperfections in the bumper meaning that the bodyshop then has to take the imperfections out before they fit the product to your car.

To summarise you really do get what you pay for. More expensive kits are made with more care/precisrion. The carlton delta kits(GRP) are ugly as sin but they but loads of effort into making them so they are thicker, stronger and perfectly formed from the mould. Yet a hard impact will still write the kit off.Standard bumpers are made of kevlar apparently, plastic coated kevlar so they are stronger than bodykits. Steel kits could be an idea for that DTM look??

Hope this helps mate, are u lookin for a kit are u

For heaven's sake, don't buy from RJM Motorsports. They have ripped off everyone I have spoken to. Really, REALLY, bad quality and exceptional customer service.
I sent my bumpers back, they claimed they didn't receive them, even though I have the documents of UPS with the guy I speaking to's SIGNATURE on!! Still waiting 8 months, now pursuing legal action.

I'd steer well clear of GRP as well. It never comes with anything to attach to the car, and is a pain in the ****.

This is how mine looked:

GRP is inferior to ABS. Its a lot cheaper to buy, but it can damage easily and can be a ballache to fit as it tends to flex and bend a lot.

It's meant to be, although it was about three inches too wide, and the centre 'mouth' was squewiff by about 2 inches. I bought them, they took about 3 months to send them, and within two hours of receiving the things, they were winging their way back, I knew they'd be dodgy as soon as I opened the parcel.
Check out the fog light holes and tow-eye cover. What the hell was I supposed to do with them?!?
