Hi I have those lumpy ceilings which I'd like smoothed. Anyone know of anyone that can give me a good deal and is reliable?

As Bryan suggests if the "artex" or textured whatever it is is in good condition then a coat of plaster is probably the best thing. If not in too good a condition like peeling then may need boarding first. Polystyrene tiles were the rage at one time and did cover but they were a fire risk.
