Has anyone got any information on the Sun Inn 203 Bridge st where my great great
grandfather William Jones was the inn keeper in 1861. I believe it was demolished to build the dock tunnel entrance.

I can't say for certain it was demolished because of the Tunnel, but it seems most likely. The inn itself was on the corner of Bridge St and Park St. The number was 203/205.

205 was enumerated for the 1911 census and it's recorded having 5 rooms, this could have been the living quarters while 203 was classed as the business premises.

Like many other pubs in the area, the Sun Inn was used on occasions for inquests by Birkenhead Coroner, Mr Churton.

Birkenhead Assizes.
The 1864 snippet from the Cheshire Observer (if you can't see it) has Joshua Jones, Sun Inn, Bridge St, in possession of a greyhound that wasn't his, the bench expressed he wasn't aware it belonged to the complainant.

According to the Licence Registers The Sun Inn, then a Higson's house tenanted by Thomas William Rowlands, closed on 23/11/1931 having been purchased by the Mersey Tunnel Committee for demolition to make way for the new tunnel entrance.

Thanks to you both for the info, I do know that the it was sold by auction in 1882 for £3,280 and was then listed as Sun Inn plus house and warehouse. Joshua the greyhound nicker who was my great grandfather then went on to own the Beehive brewery and a pub at Edge hill which was subject to a compulsory purchase order by the railways. He asked a licence sessions a for a transfer of his licence which was refused, and then refused again. He was then driven into insolvency with debts of £24,000 which was a tremendous sum in those days. So there ended the family fortune.

I remember my mother saying our family owned this pub once. My great great grandfather was Samuel Jones from Llangollen. His family owned the mill there (now the Cornmill pub). The same Jones family owned country produce stalls in the old market.

I found this newspaper snippet from 1873 which says a drunk man went into the attic of the sun inn and stole 2 pigeons and unfortunately 2 pigeons were found dead, belonging to innkeeper (or son of) joshua jones. The man didn't remember anything but witnesses saw him.

Sounds like my night out on Saturday smile
If anyone has an old picture of this pub that would be great to see

Thanks LukeJ. This is of great interest to me as it is the first time I have been able to find what could be a picture of my great grandfathers premises, which looks fairly imposing..The Picture I need now is of the Sun Inn which I have not been able to find.
Another interesting thing is your name, as we have lots of Lukes on our family tree .

yeah. My grandfather harry (henry) must also be one of your uncles. Did you meet him? He passed away about 10 years before I was born but I'm researching my family history..which is why I stumbled across this page also looking into the sun inn.
I'd send you a private message but the forum won't let me

Hi Luke, regarding your grandfather Harry .I don't have any information about him although i heard his name mentioned. He was never at any of the family gettogethers so I never met him, yet the rest of the family seemed to like a party.(and a glass or two). I have a lot of information about the rest of the family and if you could email me at [email protected] could give it to you.

Hi, just wanted to add to this thread. I have been researching my familly tree and have found my wifes 2nd great grandfather was the "licensed victualler" at The Sun Inn on the 1881 census. On the 1901 census he was again a "licensed victualler" but at The Caladonia, which i think was 209 Cleveland street. I cant find any info for the 1891 census. Any more info that anyone has or even photos, that would be great.
Thanks, Mike.

Just to add to my post. The Caladonia was at 237 Cleveland Street. This is according to the will of Leonard Roy (my wifes ancestor) who left worth £3640 when he died in 1905. A fair amount of money i think.
