Hello Wiki techno people. Having just moved I now have no broadband. I have been thinking about getting an amazon fire stick and I am wondering what speed broadband I would need for it to work efficiently. Hope I am making sense as I really don't have a clue with techno matters. Thanks in advance for any info. smile

For HDTV the suppliers of these devices
seem to recommend 5Mbits/sec and about 2Mbits for
standard definition.

I can watch HD on Youtube on my smart TV and
I have a download speed of 9Mbits so that seems to fit.

If you are lucky enough to have UHD TV that needs
about 25Mbits

Watch out if you have a cap on the total amount
you can download in a month - you can exceed that
cap as TV uses a lot of data.

"17 something or others" refers to the maximum speed you could wring out of the system. The way they word it is... "Up to 17 something or others". For you to actually achieve that speed you would have to live inside the telephone exchange. In reality the further from the Exchange you live, the less you get. If you go for Fibre optic broadband, the drop off in performance is less noticeable as you only see degradation from the cabinet. So, the further from the Cabinet you live, the less you get.

try your postcode at www.samknows.com it has alot of information about the core network for your address and should list potential service providers

I'm one mile away from the Wallasey exchange and get
9Mbits - you should do better but your own phone wiring
can have an effect so you don't really know until you
have broadband working - then use "Speedtest" or similar
to test it.

If you go to Fibre Broadband instead of ADSL you would
get much higher speeds but it is more expensive.

From what you say, I think you should be ok with
a Firestick with just normal ADSL broadband for
Standard and High Definition TV.
