Let us see how you get on with identifying the following places

They are scans of postcards - and I have removed the words identifying the view

When we have done I will re-post the full postcard scans

Have fun

Missed it - WADDI has no 4 ALMOST correct. Think of somewhere in that area having a very high enclosing wall (once upon a time - but within living memory)

I say this looking at the Bridge in the Back Ground.
Its that or Bebington looking towards the station.

2. Is Cornwall
4. Is from the Hovis Advert

No 1 Wallasey Village, Looking down Leasowe road
No 2 New Brighton , Victoria Road area
No 3 The Captains Pit as suggested by Jonno39

You are getting there

Pic 1 is looking down Leasowe Road from the juntction at the top with Wallasey Village. Look in the distance and you can see the railway bridge over Leasowe Road. To the right in the foreground is a building that was a toilet and next to that (but out of sight) was a library and police station. In the centre is the horse trough.

Pic 2 - keep guessing

Pic 3 is Captains Pit

Pic 4 is certainly St Hillary Brow area (previous guess was School Lane which I said was close but not quite)

When I said school lane I actually meant folly lane, but Im talking before the tramway was introduced and it was turned into broadway, and it ran up the side of St Hillary's chuch.

Pic 4 = yes, Folly Lane (upper part). The lower part ran alongside Buxton House and the high wall used to enclose part of Buxton House garden. Memories change things but as a kid I remember the wall being VERY high at the Wallasey Village end and then getting lower and lower until it met a (blocked off) round top gateway at the lower end where it turned 90 degrees towards Beaufort Drive. However high it was it could be climbed and we did - usually to escape the bobby when he chased us for playing in the ruin of Buxton House. No way could he climb the wall and run along the top as we could.

Just post war Buxton House ruined gardens were a source of extra fuel - trees being mysteriously cut down overnight and all "gone" by moring.

Eh WADDI - it is a LONG time since I have heard my Mam call School Lane "Back Lane" as on the map. Talk to my Mam about the Village, who lived where, was related to who and what they had for breakfast and you would be there listening for a year

So that leaves Pic 2 as yet unidentified. Look at the cottage on the extreme right. THAT is the giveaway. It has a long history

the inlaws live on St Georges, which I believe was Back Lane, I lived with them for a few years after getting married, we're in our own place now, still in the village tho.

Would love to pick your brains about a few wallasey village related history things.

Mark

I can sense it - what we will end up with is a "Wallasey Village" thread ie questions/ answers/ pics covering the general area from the sea front to say the Pool Inn, South to the railway line or even Cross Lane (by Lidl) and North to Claremount Road or even Belvidere Road

Are there enough members "hands up" to interest and wanting to contribute to such a thread?

That is correct. Pic 2 is a view from the Breck (which was the quarry used to supply the stone for making Leasowe Road) and looking south. The cottage building to the right is the original Wallasey Grammar School. Today I tried to take some photos of the same scene (for "then and now" comparison). Unfortunately to get exactly the same view I would have to stand in a LARGE clump of brambles - and anyway the whole area now has lots of trees screening most of the view of the cottage. I used to live almost opposite that cottage.

I will repost all the pictures (in some suitable place that Mark will tell me ) in their original form ie without the identification words deleted

THEN - just to tease - I will post a few more for you to guess at

Snod

As you look at the postcard the little monument/sun dial? to the left of the cottage is what i recognised.
Used to go the breck and climb up trees and on the rock when i was younger. Some lads told us it was where Batman lived so we always called it "Batmans" lol.
