Have a look at this website, its full of information to help you out.

http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/layer?r.l1=1073858805&topicId=1073859137&r.s=tl

There is information on the site that helps you decide if you are ready to start up a business,
if you do decide to go with it then it will provide information about what you need such as
a business plan etc. So its a very gd website

There are information about another persons experience of how they decided that they was
ready to start up and more.

If you have no idea on starting a business, my best advice would be to get a business advisor. They are expensive, but worth every penny, especially when you are first starting out.

They can help with most aspects of running your own business, can aid you to do a business plan, get a startup loan or other means of financial backing, put you into contact with the right types of people and basically offer support when you need it.

Also, even if you expect revenue to be lower then £61,000 in the first year, if you eventually expect revenue to exceed the VAT threshold, most times its best to start doing VAT from the beginning, as re-arranging things a year or two later to conform with VAT rules and regulations can be a pain in the arse, so be prepared for the VAT crap/or very high bills from an accountant to do it for you.

If your good with numbers it isnt too hard working out tax etc, it just takes time. A business advisor would help you with this.

I think there is a place in Birkenhead, in a building called Egerton House, which offers free business advice, it would be worth a visit to go and see them as they offer a very similar service to a full business advisor, but its aimed at startup companies. I cant remeber for the life of me the name, but Scott went and seen them last year, so I will ask him. I went with him for support and they seemed pretty good, but only take certain types of businesses as its government/EU funded, although I cant forsee any reason why this type of business wouldnt be allowed.
