Been looking through some old family nostalgia today and came across a certificate awarded to my grandad for swimming. It's dated 1911 and the place it was awarded was st Catherine's school. Anyone know where it was in birkenhead? He was brought up round the woodlands/borough road area. Thanks

No school shown on the 1912 O.S.map, but there is mention of schools in the grounds of the workhouse on the website of St.Joseph's catholic church, Willowbank Rd. (Third paragraph down).

Don't the Monkey Steps by the Old House at Home come out into Hillside Road?
I remember the Hillside Club in that road

Hillside-road aforesaid and extending thence south-westward along the middle of the last-named road for a distance of one and a half chains or thereabouts to the point at or near to the north eastern angle of the enclosure wherein stands the building known as Saint Catherine's Schools where the same road is joined by the foot way or passage (Monkey Steps off Hillside Road)

Absolutely spot on there. My friend lived at the top in the first of the new houses. I was brought up from birth in Fairfax Road. We used to have races up the monkey steps when I was a kid, then when older a race down to see who could get the pubs first lol
