Hopefully this can become a large topic with pictures and memories combined. It can be stretched from as far back as beyond most people can remember to as short ago as a few months back with the loss of St. Benedict's, Leasowe Primary, Wallasey School East Wing (it's how I remember it!) so hopefully people have some memories to share.
Is that where Mount Primary's standing now?
speaking of schools does anyone know anything about new chester road high school (pete burns went there)
Vaughan road. Hated it! No more to say.
Wallasey High School or Wallasey Horse Stables as we cruelly called it when it was deaded. Forgot I had taken these.
Is that where Mount Primary's standing now?
It is indeed Mount Primary. The old school was knocked down in 2004.
My old school...
Bebington High School For Boys ('Chegger')
Use to have Science lessons on the roof with Mrs Ferguson!
You can find a list of Schools on the wirral and banter about them in the "Schools Forum"
Click me But this Topic would be very intresting of any days gone by pictures and comments.
I'm only 25 but of the four schools I went to three of them have been demolished, as have the two I did my work experience in as a classroom assistant! Great Meols Primary School still stands but after that it gets grim: Leasowe Primary now has housing standing on it, Mosslands now has Weatherhead on its site and half of Wallasey School's gone and is now concentrated in its West Wing (Henry Meoles). As for the work experience two, Mount is now on Mount Pleasant Road and the wooden half of Lingham Primary is demolished too!
Touch of death I've got I think. And to think, my ultimate aim is to be a teacher!
Im not off the wirral myself but its a similar story here
My infant and junior shcols were both demolished within weeks of each other, and re-built on one site as a primary
Unfortunately the hell hole secondary school still stands (just a new name)

my dad went there, just wondering if you knew any1 by the name of Mark O'Rourke????

my dad went there, just wondering if you knew any1 by the name of Mark O'Rourke????
I vaguely recall that name...if he was there in the early 80s. I was there from 79-82 when I then moved to B'head and went to B.I. My memory is never that good though I recall names like Stephen Lee and Vijay Gupter!!
For anyone living in Wallasey and knows the Tavern...here is a pic when it was a school...
Then (St James School)
Now (The Tavern)
@Paulwirral
then you would remember the likes of Nogger Morris and Snotty Thomas......
and they were just the teachers........
Didn't he use to grab the hair on the back of your head...?
He was a hell of a character!!
When I left Cheggar at the start of my 3rd year I then moved to B'head so changed school and I remember, days before, part of the fire escape on the outside of the building had collapsed - with no injuries thankfully.
I also remember having to go to Bebington School For Girls for PE!! If I bunked off I would hide out on Town Lanes cementary (I lived in Town Lane) or in the local "dump" at the bottom of the cinder path.
Also, I was the one that dug the hole under the metal fence so that you didn't not have to walk right round to get into the Oval. That hole under the fence is still there and used by the new generation of kids!!
I don't suppose anybody remembers Pershore house primary school?
Best school I ever went to, standard of teaching was second to none and the entire school was like a family, I don't think there were more than 200 pupils there at one time.
They knocked it down and turned it in to this monstrosity:
Such a shame...
Sorry for the crappy initial size, sitll getting used to photobucket and there doesn't seem to be any option to edit:
I remember the name Pershore House but can't remember the location.
I'm sure Photobucket does have a re-size function.
I does but only if you upload a decent sized imagine in the first place
Used to be on Prenton Lane just off Storeton Rd, right next to the church.
It was such a beautiful old building. Developers should be shot for knocking places like that down, they could've convert it into flats, but more profitable to knock the whole thing down and build more ''boxes'' for people to live in I guess...
They've changed the wording on the "The Tavern" now to make it appeal more to the "yoof" it seems
Went past it on Saturday.
The Tavern the only club on the wirral where you have to wipe your feet on the way out.

I'm surprised the 'yoof of today' would know what the hell a tavern was!
I don't suppose anybody remembers Pershore house primary school?
Mal Holmes who is the drummer with Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) went there: late 60s / early 70s.
The Tavern is the Wirral equivalent of The Grafton

'ere, you leave my Tav alone!! It's only down the road from me!

I used to go there............................... To deliver the mail.
Right snotty gits they were too and that was just the teachers.
Posh school for posh kids whose parents paid so obviously the standard of education was good. I won't hold it against you though.
bugger I went there with those kids !!and we hid in the cemetary to get out of the run!!!
Posh school paid for does not necessarily = good standard of education... I still reckon if you're clever and determined enough you'll rise to the top in any school.

I'll second that, I went to a grammar school and im thick as shit. Think my mother sure did care about my education
how did you pass 11+? Did you phone a friend?

hmmmm shows that suzy is deffo dum too !
...the irony
Indeed - I go to a shit school and still manage a 2:1 degree from a red brick university... as i say - its not the school its the pupil's intelligence and determination
Anyone remember the wooden annex that was part of Lingham Primary school on Maryland Lane when the school had 3 sites?
Yup was up by St Stephens...
Do remember their adverts on the local papers - where there was always at least one spelling mistake !

What about BI, i think it was, in Bidston, next to the cemetery, now a housing estate.

Are you thinking of Tollemache School on the traffic lights. Naughty boys used to be sent there at weekends to scrub the floors, that would be in the sixties.
Weatherhead. Original sites. Gone :-c
I went to Weatherhead. The only thing that makes me sad about it`s demolision is the on the middle school site (where new primary has been built) in the hall they had the great big leather embossed(?) signs of all the old head girls. By the time I got there I think they`d given up on appointing head girls. Shame I never took much interest in the schools history. I heard it was bombed in WWII and that a girl died in the hall after falling from the balcony, if that is true, then now I am very sorry. I can remember looking over the balcony with that story in my head. Can anyone help on that?
used to go to cavendish when it was a all girls school.think building still there not sure what it is thought. was told school haunted by a young girl who saved her brother from fire in the school think she was called mary bell.
Used To Go to Lingham Primary In Moreton: The Wooden Bit I was in got demolished
Then Went To Vyner Primary: That Got Shut Down
Then Went To Park High: It's Getting Shut Down And Renewed.
I Think I'm Cursed With Schools.
Anyone remember the wooden annex that was part of Lingham Primary school on Maryland Lane when the school had 3 sites?
Barston Lane School. I used to live near there. I remember woodern buildings then a brick toilet block and there was 1 or 2 ugly buildings which would of been the canteen. The canteen became a boxing club and the school was used as Serve Wirral I think it was some Maggie Thatcher YTS training place.
I went to Lingham Primary school the lower school has been pulled down. I then went to Oldershaw once again the lower school has been pulled down. Then I went to Borough
Road College and yes its been pulled down beat that.
i went to manor middle on the ford and it has been knocked down ,then went to bi and that got pulled down .i wouldnt say either was good at educating me but had the best time at both .as they say you only reap what you so
I went to The Woodlands primary (the original victorian building between bourgh road and the Woodlands)it was a spooky old building with a swimming pool the size of a hot tub behind the canteen. Our year was the last to leave for high school before they relocated to Whestone Lane.
i went to manor on the ford the fist day the school opened was called manor county only there a year moved to cavendish secondary school which hs now gone

Went there myself Chris, left 86'. Have a look at the photos on The Woodlands Facebook page, loads of good photos.
Ive just been on facebook Ronnie, its all japanese to me, do I just put the woodlands in the search bar? I have asked for pics of the old school for ages so many thanks!
Chris
Thanks a bundle Ronnie

Anybody remember Christ Church Claughton on Borough Rd. I have some photos from about 59-60, will post if anybody is interested.
Anybody remember(or went)to Gorsedale Secondary Modern School - Seacombe?
Demolished in the 70's??
anyone remember dell primary school new ferry knocked down now
I remember the Dell but never went there myself,my nephew did though and he hated it there, don't know why though.
Anyone remember Hamilton Secondary school, for the sons of gentlemen, now looks as if it's an office and the playground is now a carpark,AG Evans the PE Teacher,McIntyre the headmaster followed by HE Hunt,Parry the woodwork master, life was hard but these made it harder. LOL
I remember Birkenhead Institute. I went to St Anselm's, and everytime we drove past on the minibus thing to the sports ground (in Noctorum), they were all standing outside shouting abuse at us. Really horrible school with reject scally pupils (sorry if anyone went there!). It's now gone, it's only famous pupil being Wilfred Owen, the war poet (of which a name under the grounds is named after).
When B.I shut then kids from that school came to our school (park high) that was a massive mistake as them schools were always battling each other.
Hamilton Secondary (Hemmy)
what years were you there (me 57/58)
I remember there were 4 forms for each year Upper and Lower 1a and Upper and Lower 1b
Harry Lett was maths teacher
The music teacher at the time used to play songs by Paul Robeson
and used to tap you on the head with his baton which when it broke made him terribly upset
I think A G Evans eventually moved to the Osses
What were the house names
Has anyone got any old photos of Hamilton secondary?

Oi! I went there and resemble that remark!!
Another famous Old Boy is Lewis Collins.
I dont get the idea that schools must have a famous ex pupil to be deemed worthy?!
I WENT TO BI BETWEEN 1980-1984 IT WAS A REALY GOOD SCHOOL DAVE REEVES AND HIS BROTHER ALAN BOTH PLAYED PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL DAVE WAS A STRIKER AND ALAN A DEFFENDER ,I KNOW ALAN PLAYED FOR WIMBLEDON AND THINK DAVE WAS AT CARLISLE AMONGST OTHERS BUT WE WHERE ALL SCALLIES BUT WAS AN ALL BOYS SCHOOL SO WE GOT FRUSTRATED WITH NO GIRLS TO LOOK AT HA HA

jeez, is your capslock stuck on!!!???
The only school that is left standing that I went to is Grove Street Infants school in New Ferry. My secondary schools have been demolished.
My old school is still been used. Its name has changed over the years. Temple Road School, then was called Prenton Secondary and is now called Devonshire Park
Temple Road/Prenton Sec. What year did you escape jimbob ? I found a hole under the railings in 1959 !!
Violet, I went to St Anselm's just post-war and the sports field was a rough area because they said it had been a gun site during the war. Any proof of that, anyone? It was OK for rugby and cross-country but not much else.
Can you tell me where it was, I can't remember?
We used to 'colaborate' with Upton Hall Convent! Is that still going?
Bri
I dont get the idea that schools must have a famous ex pupil to be deemed worthy?!
We're very proud of Paul O'Grady, at St.Anselm's!
Bri
My primary school is still there, although much changed.
Well Lane. 1942-48
Highfield in Bidston Road. I went there between 1950 and 1953. It was run by a formidable lady called Miss Williams. I beleve it has closed recently. I used to have to walk about a mile along Bidston Road by myself. Imagine doing that to-day. I did play truant a few times !!
I went to well lane,I left when I was in class two (1983 approx) my teacher at the time was an evil cow called Mrs Dickson. One day my coat got caught on the hooks in class, she could see I was stuck and she just left me there for what seemed like all day.She used to point at the class with what seemed like an ENORMOUS finger and stare at me with little pointy eyesShe terrified me that woman.Mrs olive on the hand was a bit of an odd ball who used to play the piano all the time in class 1.
I'd like to see a photo of the OLD St.John's, New Ferry, behind the church in Bebington Road.
I went there during WW2 years. I'm not surprised it was abandoned as it was worn-out Victorian then, with worn concave steps and dusty floor boards. Half the playground was earth and the outside toilets were across this.
There were big sliding partitions to divide the central space but they were not in place so there were 2 lessons going on at the same time! Difficult to concentrate!
The desks must have been the original, all black and grooved tops. I used to let my mind wander and pretend the grooves were roads on a map. I'm still into maps!
Bri
I went to Chegger Road, mine was the last year there.

Anybody remember(or went)to Gorsedale Secondary Modern School - Seacombe?
Demolished in the 70's??
Kirklands Secondary Modern, Rock Ferry. No longer in existance but a good school many years ago. Girls one side of the school and lads the other. We had some real interesting staff teaching during my time. Mr Stockly science, Geof Arnold, English, Ema Davies, Art, Pritchard, History. The latter Pritchard would send you to join the girls class in the playground if you were caught looking through the window at them playing netball during his lesson. Didn't learn much at the time but but it was quite an education just attending the place.
Cathcart Street, yeh great days - a brilliant school that should never have been demolished. We had really good football and cricket teams ran by speedy, I was proud to pull on the red and white stripes at borough rd playing fields.Mr Goodier was our Headmaster with Mr George and Mr Cooper, Miss Quarry and Mr Baker in support.
I left in 1963 to become a Birkenhead Idiot along with Richie O` Brien.
hi wombat, have you got any photos of the old school ,or speedy. would give you my e.mail. iff you have. thanks.

Did anyone else go to St Saviours C of E Primary School?
It was next to the Arno in Oxton.I left in 1966,to go on to senior school. The Headmistress at St Saviours was Miss Foster. I remember Mr Chisholm, Miss Poulter and Mrs Davies. It was a lovely old Victorian building, it had big old doors with huge brass doorknobs and stone mullion windows. If I remember there were stone faces on the building, they may have been angels faces. We had to have our shool dinners in the church hall next door. that was the venue for our christmas concerts and school plays. The new school which replaced it was built at the top end of Holm Lane.I've always felt fortunate to have gone to the old school, it was a lovely old place.
Chisholm, Foster and Davies all taught me too but I dont remember Poulter, probably because I left in 1969 to go to secondary school. I do remember the old building and the parish hall but I also spent a couple of years in the new building after the old building was demolished.

Takes me back that school, I also used to have Mrs Ferguson. Another teacher stood out was mrs Jeoffrys she was hard indeed seen her get hit a few times and lay out the culprit. Also had Mr Viner for maths was hopless. I went there from 1980 to 84 I think the deputy headmaster was Mr Howls or something like that. Had many cainings there. I remember going to the girls school for PE and a mr Thompson used to own a BMW motortbike. Bygone age now I still have my school picture was supposed to be with my teacher Mrs Smith but she was off due to illness and we had it taken with Mrs Jeoffrys instead. Used to have a huge crush on Mrs Smith.

Hi Davew. Yeah I remember "Hemmie", I started in 1958 - 1962 in "Scott House" (Red Colour.) Remember L.T. Davis, he was my Form master, then there was Harry Lett, Technical Drawing Teacher, followed by Mr. Sullivan who used to sing songs while rapping your knuckles with a ruler...(sadist.) Don't forget Mr Bentley Science Master in the Annexe...(so uptight!) and dear old Mr.Prichard our Religious Instruction teacher, nice old soul. I still fondly think of them days, thanks for caring, (and daring,) to remember happier days gone by.
Hi Derek. Mr. Holtham was the Music teacher, ( got real carried away didn't he )their were four school houses, "Cook",(Green), "Drake" (Blue), "Nelson" (Yellow), and "Scott" (Red). I was in Lower 1A in 1958 then got promoted to the Upper A's on sitting the summer exams, nice of you to remember the music teacher, you jogged my memory with your recollection, but thats what its all about this forum, isn't it, keeping are minds sharp and active, cheers mate.
Please can someone put a google aerial pic up of the area which used to the playing fields of Whetstone Lane BI
All I can remember from nearly 50 years ago was the part of the cross country runs up Thornton Rd and Storeton Woods.
I think Tranmere Rovers took over them but had some agreement to keep a memorial? in existence there
thanks DD,I couldn't remember where it was and wasn't too sure of the name

The seven acres of land were bought in 1925, levelled and laid out as playing fields. In 1926 the old boys of the school funded the building of the pavilion as a memorial to those old boys who fell in the first world war. The pavilion was opened on 6th November 1926. The fields were called "The Mount Road Memorial Ground, Ingleborough Road".
In 1933 eighty eight poplar trees were planted to honour those pupils who lost their lives in the First World War. Also in 1933 the ornamental entrance archway was added, again through the generosity of Old Boys.
The site is listed with the Imperial War Museum as a First World War Memorial along with the eighty eight poplar trees planted on the boundary to honour the former pupils from the Birkenhead Institute who died in the First World War.
After the closure of the School, the playing fields were bought by Tranmere Rovers, covenants were imposed in the Deed of Exchange which protected the status of the Memorial Ground as a playing field.
The memorial gates were removed by Tranmere Rovers in 2001.
In 2006 Tranmere Rovers applied for planning permission to build housing on the site, although a spokesman for Tranmere Rovers chairman Lorraine Rogers, was quoted as saying: "The memorial will remain whatever happens to the land."

Description: The memorial gates in 1999
Thanks uptoncx
googleview showing size compared to Tranmere Rovers ground
Looks like it will be sold for housing developement in spite of covenants.
Where there's profit to be made, sadly there'll be ways of getting round the covenants
ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaa I used to crawl through that gap under the fence behind the artificial ski slope. I was from Town Lane and used to walk up the cinder path to get to The Oval baths

anyone remember dell primary school new ferry knocked down now
The Dell was in Rock Ferry
It was indeed in Rock Ferry - just, the boundary went down the back edge of the school land so that both sides of Thorburn Road were in New Ferry.

The school opened at the same time that the boarding school opened in 1863, at first it occupied part of the priest's house. The school moved into its 'new' building in 1871, this was greatly extended in 1914. St Joseph's school moved to its new building on Moreton Road in 1966.
The old building is still standing and is now used by Upton Hall School.
thanks george ,a few names, john allen, david dyble, alastair gow, billy ross, sally vickery, violet harrigan, speedy of course, these are from 1952-1958. i cant think of many but would remember iff reminded. find it very difficult to get photos of people,or the school itself.
Hi just been reading this thread and found it very interesting looking at the school were my dad used to go. According to the dates you have mentioned I can only assume the people listed were his class mates!!!! His name is Bruce Hogan and I wonder if anyone remembers him?!?!?! I think he is on the picture in the play ground! Lovely picture to see! Thanks
I went to The Woodlands primary (the original victorian building between bourgh road and the Woodlands)it was a spooky old building with a swimming pool the size of a hot tub behind the canteen. Our year was the last to leave for high school before they relocated to Whestone Lane.
Went there myself Chris, left 86'. Have a look at the photos on The Woodlands Facebook page, loads of good photos.
There's a bloody good footy team on there now ,;-))
Still no contact with any of the lads who i went to school with
in Hemmy 1950 -1955 upper 4a To mention a few
Norman Lewis ,Robert Hughes ,Tommy Woods ,Maurice Cartwright
Peter Faulkner ,Oscar Mckay,Brian Moore ,Eddie Shields
& Brian Forrester
Does anybody know whats happened to the lads from that er
George Hayes
George, Eddie Shields died years ago, I'm assuming he's the same one, he knew Chewy Lyons, the last one i told you who died, Eddie lived in the high rise flats that used to be by the Pilot, Duke St. probably the same bloke. As far as i know he went to Hemmy with Chewy.
You are correct Eddie was a big mate of Chewy Lyons
I think at one time Eddie lived off Oliver st near were Chewy
lived in Wilson st, the last time i saw Eddie was in the Grange
on Charing Cross having a pint ,that could have been between
30 to 40 yrs ago I have not lived in Birkenhead since 1962 i
only got to see mates on my vists back home
Thanks for the info its most welcome as i have not had much luck searching myself
Cheers George
That's right George, i drank with Eddie in the Grange, when it was knocked down we moved to the Labour club( The York) Grange Rd, time flies, he died of throat cancer about 15-20 years ago. Went the match with him as well, good Blue.
I went to Withensfield Middle School from 1981 to 1982, it is where Liscard Primary is now. There is a Centenary Summer Fair on 16 July and an open evening on 19 July from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. All former staff and pupils are welcome to take a tour of the building.
BERT 1 what school did you go to ,did you know a guy called
Donny Charlton he was one of the first Ted,s in town
did you ever go to the Craftsmans Club in Grange rd
you never know we may have crossed paths in our last life
By the way i hope i have got the team right I am a big
blues fan also not many round here there all (WET HEADS)
MAN -U & MAN CITY supporters but i can hold my own
George
George, i went to woody sec, i can't say i know Donny and i would have gone to the Craftmans once or twice. Its just strange that you have mentioned a couple of blokes I've known. I knew Chewy from Lairds, Eddie i met through a lad called Pat Stanton around 1973, that name might ring a bell, Eddie and Pat were mates from childhood i think.
vaguely recall a lad called Eddie Shields who lived in Collingwood st off Grange rd ( wouldnow be about 68 years old) and there was a Pat Stanton who lived in Oliver Place nickname (k)nucker? roughly same age or older.
I used to go to the craftsmans regularly on a Thursday or Saturday night roughly about 1965 to 1969
Same lad Derek, Pats nickname was Knucker, i never called him that, he got Urko off me from Planet of the Apes.
Same lad Derek, Pats nickname was Knucker, i never called him that, he got Urko off me from Planet of the Apes.
Don't get the Urko part - was it one of those Planet of the Apes
toys
Urko was General Urko in plant of the apes series, probably was a toy as well. Pat had a bad corn and used to walk like him, Urko was a gorilla by the way.
Have we mentioned St. Georges Secondary Modern school in Leasowe Road Wallasey yet? If not, I have!
Bert i had relations called Stanton they used to live in
Horratio st of Grange rd, my cousons were Jimmy, Barbara, and one with an unusual name i think it was spelt MYRTLE, I have not seen
any of them since about 1957 you never know they may be related to your mate
Can't help you there George, i only know his brothers and sisters, must be a good chance of them being the same family.
does anyone remember Our Lady's infants and junior schools, price st Bhead near Our Lady's RC church from 1958-1964? Think both schools still there (friends reunited)
When I was about 14 I crowned Our Lady in the May day celebration at the church does anyone have any old photos?
I remember Canon Quinn often came to our assesemblies and I thought he was on fire - he wasn't he just had his ciggie in his pocket! wouldn't be allowed now!!

google hoylake junction, was a few things on there if i remember rightly
Hopefully this can become a large topic with pictures and memories combined. It can be stretched from as far back as beyond most people can remember to as short ago as a few months back with the loss of St. Benedict's, Leasowe Primary, Wallasey School East Wing (it's how I remember it!) so hopefully people have some memories to share.
Anyone on Forum remember Maris Stella Rowson St New Brighton or have memories of 1950's of St Alban's Liscard?
I went to Withensfield Middle School from 1981 to 1982, it is where Liscard Primary is now. There is a Centenary Summer Fair on 16 July and an open evening on 19 July from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. All former staff and pupils are welcome to take a tour of the building.

I went there from age eleven to sixteen. There were about 240 pupils so you knew everyone.
Don't remember the socials at St Albans, but my dad was strict so doubt I would have been allowed to go. I was not allowed to go to English Martyrs Youth Club as he though 'Teddyboys' went there which was far from the truth.
I was allowed at fourteen to go to Scout Socials with my Mum and Grandmother. Big deal!
I loved my dad,and it was explained in later life that my parents did not want me to come to any harm. Unfortunately I hardly had any fun as a teenager and even older. It's weird to have more fun over forty than when you are younger!
Using church as an excuse I did manage to go to some Sunday afternoons at Kraal Club, and a couple of afternoon 'booze' cruises on Royal Iris until a neighbour who was on the boat spilled the beans!

Well done for escaping on sunday afternoons, went there most sundays, great happy memories.

Thanks Parkgater
here i go again, has anyone got pictures of cathcart street in the 1950s please, seems like every school but !
Sadly, I suppose we have to add Mostyn House School in Parkgate.
Yes, sadly it looks in decline with no buyer on the horizon!
Just read this post, band I played in "entertained" ther on many Saturday evenings. Can't remember the name(s) we played under, like lots of other bands, these were changed regularly if we didn't go down too well. They weren't even called gigs then, they were bookings!
A visit to The Boot was usually required, either before starting,or during the break. The second half always started with prayers from the Parish Priest before he rushed off to give "last rights" to his whisky bottle.
It was something for lots of young folk to do,no trouble and paid for our equipment and beer. What more could a teenage "rock god" ask for?
Dorothy ,
Didn't Norah Reynolds live in School Place ??
Do you remember the Barm Cakes from Blackledges the Bakers just up from you ....??
I don't recognise this - I used to work there in 2000 on security- it must have been before there was a lot of building done
I was going to Our Ladys school during the blitz a nd our Canon Tallon was killed when our junior school and the church was hit. This meant us having a short holiday while some teachers retrieved books etc from the half demolished juniors. How is that for health and safety. Our classes were then moved into the hall of the infants and the classes were taught side by side which made it very hard to concentrate. Happy days. Joney.
Hi im looking for information and school photographs of St Annes Primary school in 1963-1969 which used to be in Price St Birkenhead
I have 2 photographs if anyones interested
You arent the only one that went to Cathcart street. My sisters, Jean,Angela, myself Stanley and brother Dennis all went there. We lived in Hope Street which was a two minute walk from the school and for our dinner we had to walk up the road to a seperate building. We shopped at Mr Tapeleys and went to church at St Peters sometimes.
Hello,I only know one name on your list and that was Jean Baker.Jean was my sister and went to Cathy along with my other sister Angela,my self Stanley and my brother Dennis. We lived in Hope Street which was a two minute walk from the school and shopped in Mr Tapeleys. We had to walk up the road to a seperate building for our dinner and when you reached a certain age you had to go to a seperate annexe for a year.
Looked through the backlog on this one, surprised how mixed up people get over some schools but still, it was a long time ago. I went to Trinity Street myself and then the BI, but the old BI on Whetstone Lane. That is the BI that Wilfred Owen went to. I was there until 1958. The school shut and then Tollemache Road, which was called a Secondary Modern, took the BI name over for some reason. The old BI was a Grammar School otherwise known as a High School. For some reason all the schools seem to be High Schools now. Progress......
Yes, progress dictates that there should not be any losers...
hi stan, what years were you at cathcart street.
Was there from 1955 to 1961.Sorry dont remember any of the people that went there or any of the teacher`s names, too much water has run under the bridge since them days.Never forget school dinners though, where you had to walk up the road,I can still see that building as clear as day.
Yes I was one of them.40 hours scrubs Ha Ha.
i went 1952-58,been looking for photos of the old school for ages
found one of 1953 with the children dressed up because of the coronation but dont know how to upload it.If you want it put your email on here and will send it.
thanks stan, ive already got that one,me and my other half are on it,thanks again stan.
Does anyone have a picture od The Dell School. i am currently making a film about rock ferry and could do with a picture of The Dell School. the older the better but any will do
thanks
Dave
I attended BI from 1972 to 1976,Nogger Morris wa the bain of my life I hated latin with a passion he would grab your sideys and yank on them upwards making you stand on your tiptoes and he had the infamous "Mr Pike" with which he would wrap round your butt cheeks lol, other teachers I remember from BI are Titty Tomlinson and Mr Topping the english teachers, Taffy Evans the french teacher he was great for lending you 2p for your busfare home he never ever clicked on I lived across the road lol another teacher was Frothy Turner the careers teacher I dont know how true it was but legend has it he used to drink dettol after being tortured by the japanese in the war, best teacher ever was Citto or Mr Citrene the history teacher he would go off on a tangent from the topic and tell us mad stories, I'm sure if i think about it I can name a few more but will save them for another day Oh nearly forgot about Skinny Malcom the deputy head scary man lol looked like a cross between a vampire and that wierd keyboard player from the seventies band Sparks lol
I attended BI, or Grange Secondary Modern School for Boys aka Tolley(as it was known then) from 1964 - 69. I can remember some of the teachers you mentioned, such as Taffy Evans, Mr Citrene and Frothy Turner. Yes, I can vividly remember him drinking Dettol in his tea. He told us he'd been bitten on the lip by a snake during the war. What I found strange was that he kept his "Dettol" in a whisky bottle! Mind you, to be fair, it was "Teachers"!
The headmaster was G.A.Topp, he used to drive a big black car which we referred to as the GATmobile. Then there was Ben Lyon, the chemistry teacher, who bore a striking resemblance to Kenneth Connor from the Carry On films. I can remember him having a strap hanging up in his little storeroom, it reminded me of one of those straps that barbers of old would sharpen their cutthroat razors on. To be fair, I don't think he ever used the strap on any of the lads, I think he just kept it for its scare value (it did that alright!) Also, there was Kitty Williams, rumour had it she used to eat Kit-e-Kat butties but I don't know if it was true or not. Then there was Jock Moet, Arthur Pearce, Mr Ravenscroft, Ivor Walker, Lilly Pritchard, Keith Davies... and even Torchy, the Caretaker... Geez, they're all coming back to me!
Dave just reading your post there and another few names you quoted where still at the school when I attended, I remember Kieth Davies think he taught art Ben Lyon physics teacher, if memory serves me right Lily was also an art teacher and later married Keith George Forster the maths teacher, I can remember Arthur Pearce but can't remember what he taught, when you were there did you get thrown down the shrubbery as a first year lol apparently it was a custom! If you left in 69 you wouldn't remember the cabins being built on the middle campuses where one side was the tech drawing rooms and the other was used for remedial students(not politically correct these days)
Hi Colin, When I was there, I recall Keith Davies and Lily Pritchard having a bit of a thing for each other because they always seemed to be in each other's company (although this could've been because they both taught Art). Arthur Pearce taught P.E. (and another subject which I can't quite remember). Yes, I do recall the initiation of being thrown down the bushes when you first started there, but luckily I dodged the bullet because I missed the first week of the "big school" due to me being in hospital having my tonsils out.
I thought it was a shame when they decided to demolish the school and build houses there.
I lived directly opposite the school Dave in Tollemache road took me all of 1 minute to walk to school, I had moved away from the area by the time they knocked it down but for some strange reason my dad salvaged a brick from the demolition for posterity lol, the topic got me hunting the internet for more info and I never knew until last night that Lenny Malcolm had been at the school for years as a deputy head and was overlooked as a future headmaster, a guy called Sam Dennerley was my headmaster an Arthur Lowe lookalike lol, I thought it was rather poignant that they named the streets and closes that were built with names relevant to the old school
I was saddened to find my junior school, Pensby County Junior School in Greenbank Drive, had been demolished a couple of years ago. Also flattened was the annexe built during or immediately after WW2, a sturdy building that showed little wear for its 60+ years. I can't see many 21st century "ticky tacky" boxes lasting anything like 60 years, or even just 20.
Does anyone remember the Welsh Dragon, Mrs. Parry? She got me through my 11-plus.
Pete

Hey Colin, your Dad sounds a bit like me. When I moved out of Tees Street in 1994, where I'd lived for almost 40 years, I took some bricks from my old house (when they pulled it down, that is) and used them to build a brick fireplace in the house I'm in now. Sadly, I decided to get rid of the fireplace about five years later but it was nice having that special connection with my old house for a while.
Anyhow, getting back onto the subject of our old school... Do you remember the Top Shop in Tollemache Road/corner of Bidston Avenue? I can remember all the Tolley lads got barred from there because some of them were caught shoplifting. Well, I was only little for my age so I could easily pass for a kid from the nearby Bidston Avenue Junior School, so I'd charge the lads to go to the Top Shop to get their sweets and pop for them (although my fee was usually in sweets as well)
Yeah Dave I remember the top shop it closed down not long after I left and became firstly a shop that sold garden stuff then changed again and became Cheshire Gaming supplies selling all party stuff and bingo tickets etc,I saw a pic from 1994 I think on the site showing Tolly all boarded up and ready for demolition but I noticed that what was the dining hall annexe had been removed, if you remember it seperated the lower 2nd & 3rd years playground from the 4th & 5th years What was the name of the field in the grounds was it called "the Acre"
I can't remember "The Acre" mate, but I seem to recall something called "The Plateau" although this might have actually been the square piece of greenery in the middle of the school itself... Or was there two? My memory's getting a bit rusty these days, lol
.
Mind you, I can still remember the four House names when I was there.. There was Somerville, Grenville, Mallory and Lawrence (I was in Somerville and our House Colour was yellow).
Your Right Dave it was "the Plateau" with steps on the junior side but level with the seniors yard, By the time I got to the school the house names had all changed and become 6 Tate (red) Westminster(blue),Davies(Orange) Cohen(white),Stitt(Green) & Aitkin(Purple)Its amazing what useless info you have lodged at the back of your brain lol,
I think you just hit the nail on the head, Colin. I can't remember all the useful stuff I learnt in school, but I'm a goldmine when it comes to useless information, lol.
Speaking of which, I remembered the name of another teacher while I was there. He was a Science teacher named Mr R. Looney and at the time I couldn't help but wonder if the "R" stood for "Raving" lol.
Dave ,
Do you remember Ray Hawthorne ....he lived in Tees St the same time you and also went Tolly ....think he left about 1962...he used to be in the Cross-Country team....like most people I think it was a mistake to close the school .....they should have just bussed pupils in as they do over here in the States
Cheers
Hi Dave, I went to Tolly and remember when they raised the lower section to make it one big Plateau. There was four big murals on the walls in the main corridor. One if each of the houses. When I was there I was one of the guys who painted Lawrence ( the Green House ) I went there from 52 to 55 and had a great time. It was a bad school until (The Gat,) our name for George Arthur Top became the head with his long flowing gown !! Arthur Pears was the PE teacher and math some times. He was the best teacher . Kitty was there and Jerry Jitterbug the other music teacher. I often wonder if there are any pictures of the 4 murals ?? I got School Colours for Cross country running. Hated English. Johnny one Ball was our teacher in them days. Ivor Walker was good geography teacher
It was Tommy one ball not Johnny one ball. His name was Tommy Kinley and he taught English. I met him many years after I left school in '59. It was about 1978 and he was getting on a bit. I gave him a lift into Birkenhead town centre.
Raymondoj....and others ....wasn't his name McKinley ...and he became the Assistant Headmaster ....sometime about 1957-62
Arthur Peers was an excellent PE teacher also Jock Mowatt...Fred Phillips taught Technical Drawing and Maths ....do you remember the ice slides that everyone used at the Flaybrick side playground .
Cheers
Anybody know anything about Cavendish Secondary School for girls I was there 1955 to 59?
Dave .....his name was Mr Rooney not Mr Looney.....he taught Religious Instruction (R.I.)
Hi does anyone know the name of the school that used to be opposite where The Queens pub now is in Storeton Road Oxton? Thanks.
Hi does anyone know the name of the school that used to be opposite where The Queens pub now is in Storeton Road Oxton? Thanks.
Oxton National School, St Saviours Institute.?
Hi just found some wonderful photos on The friends of Arno and Oxton website. Thanks for the heads up with the name !
Hello there. Yes I knew your Dad really well. He was a great kid. Talked to him via some obscure friend finder many many years ago. I know he worked in the NHS yes? and emigrated to Australia was it? Tell him hello from me if you see him (Stevan Newcomb)
Great pics of old Chegger Road school by the way. Despite its workhouse appearance I was quite fond of the old place. Incidentally Stephen Lee was one of my best mates. Great lad. Why he had dentures at his age I can’t remember.
Couple of art teachers passed away this year Dave Jones and Keith Davies..
Anyone remember Poulton primary or Moreton Middle School?
St Georges Leasowe Road ,building still in use. Leasowe Primary I think moved into the building formerly used by Oxley girls school ,they merged with Henry Meoles which was renamed Wallasey School then Kingsway Academy that closed last month .Building now empty.Anyone know what's likely to happen to it? It seems to me that as the population increases the schools decrease.
My old school was Kirklands secondary in Rockferry. It's well gone now , houses been built on it. Any old pupils on here?
