To let out the Bogey men after midnight :-) (Dilly) Shhh.. Seriously though, I have no real idea. Maybe it had the workings to set the gun off, but thats only a guess

I just thought, it must be 45 years or more since I saw the gun. I remember it being by a tall wooden fence about 8 foot high. I also think it used to be by where they unloaded cattle for the abattoir at Woodside, but before my time. Maybe in the early 50`s or late 40`s. I`ll have to get around to taking a walk down there.

Zipper, I vagely remember where they unloaded cattle for the abbatoir- it was in that area. My dad used to take me and my sister walking around there in the late 70s/ early 80s.

After the war they used an old Hotchkiss gun that was fired by remote control.

Yup, thats the one o'clock gun they have managed to leave it there and can still access it by the side of Morpeth Dock - a bit of history that hasn't been lost to developers
