I spent a couple of hours exploring this area a few days ago. Although I knew of its existence, I never really knew much about it.
It’s bounded roughly by Borough Rd., Whetstone Lane and Clifton Rd., although the conservation area is smaller. Many of the houses are
Grade 2 listed. It started as a select area for business people in the 1840’s, with some large houses on Clifton Road.
There is a wide variety of houses in the area, from large detached to small terraced. Kelly’s Directory of 1900 shows a range of occupations, mostly professionals but also some shop workers; I can’t see any “labourers”.
Unfortunately, quite a few of the original houses have been demolished and replaced by flats; I suspect that most of the remaining large houses are now sub-divided and rented.
