A seldom seen photo of the underneath of the roadway of the Mersey Tunnel,looking towards Birkenhead.

I wonder why they designed it to run trams under the roadway when there was already a train tunnel?

if what i remember was true, it was for transporting workers about under the tunnel?

From the book "The Mersey Tunnel; the Story of an Undertaking"
published in about 1954 by Birkenhead Council for the Tunnel Joint Committee.
