I thought I would start this topic as a catch-all for pictures of bits and pieces we can find along the roads of Wirral. These may be electricity or water boxes, gas street lamps, post boxes etc - whatever you find - happy hunting.
Hamilton Square, I suspect this is the base of an old street lamp that has been capped. There is a large door on the side facing the camera (I realise now what a rubbish angle I chose!)
Whetstone Lane, Birkenhead (from
water filling points thread)
Arno Road, Prenton, the remains of an old gas lamp.
I'm curious to know who did the artistic paint job on the Parkway box. It's probably not the electricity company because time is money to them, so was it a private effort? Very interesting!
Bri
Oops! Rechecking, I've noticed they are all the same and this pattern is everywhere in the old photos of the borough. It's not obvious why these should be different unless a special type was used for the prestigious Hamilton Square.
Bri
Thanks for that bri, you are most certainly right on that, I thought is a bit heavy duty for a street lamp.
Anyone else got/know of any old street furniture that still exists. Don't worry about pictures, they can be sorted easily enough, so just descriptions and location would be fine.
cool topic, i'll keep my eyes peeled.
Yes, i'll keep my eyes peeled. V.interesting. All this history under our noses!
Great subject and pics really interesting to think we pass these things everyday and don't notice.
Heres one for the history buffs of Wiki Wirral.
I am wondering what this is. There are a few of them in Hoylake around the kings gap area. This one in particular is about half way down Stanley road.
I guess it may have something to do with old gas street lights. Perhaps it housed a constantly burning flame for the man whos job it was to light the lamps in the area?. Any ideas?.
A couple taken on a recent visit. The post is one of the ones across the alley from the top of Holborn Hill to Thompson St. It's the base of a footpath finger post; the remaining words are "Erected by", then probably "Wirral Footpaths etc Society", as seen in the second pic which is at the Woodchurch Rd. railway bridge, between the railway & the Fender. I think the "etc" stands for "and open spaces preservation" That organisation was founded in 1888.
I think the stubby pipes in the Hoylake area are vents. Maybe not from the sewer (stench pipes) as they are too low and would be a bit pongy, but for other (surface water ?) drains. The collar around the base is identical to those fitted REVO street lamp columns in the 40's/50's.
Someone on wiki has an Endoscope, not sure who. A quick peep down the "pipe" might give a clue.
Just my 2d's worth.
The Wirral has a lot of Stench Pipes, most in Birkenhead are of the same design. Here are some from the Prenton area which seems to have more than its fair share of these items.

Hope it's not being dumped. It's worth preserving. Would look great in the front garden of a Victorian house. Cheshire-built, as well!
that was it bought for been laying there about 4/5 years or even longer? all that ££ just rusting away cost a fortune to buy one i bet.
Anything from £275 to £2300, with top lantern, on ebay!!
that's crazy? iwill ask about top lantern and how much he paid and when. cheers
Just make him an offer. You could make a bob or two!
wouldnt do that on this guy keeps me in work
Found a fine example of a gas bracket lamp yesterday. It's attached to a sewer stench pipe in Oxton; Egerton Rd. near St.Seiriol Close.
Good spot Chris, it is interesting that the stench pipe has been extended, presumably just in case of any methane build-up getting ignited by the gas-lamp.
Also because it is tall (I guess), it has the extended width base as well.

Yes, it's twice the normal height; I think your explanation is probably correct.
Street furniture? yes, I think so. An unusually shaped street name plate. New Ferry, near the river.
An old gas lamp, now converted to electric, in Rock Park. The post is by REVO of Tipton & the lantern is a Sugg. (Thanks, Pinzgauer).
Could do with a re-paint!
A removable barrier post in Rock Park. Is this old, or a modern reproduction?
Yes Chris, it certainly looks like a genuine item that has been recycled, just something with the depth of the edges of the "mouldings" make it look pukka.
Have you got a picture from the side to see if the locking loop has been welded on?
That's the only pic. I have. It looked old to me.
A couple more pics. of guide posts. The octagonal posts have cast into them the following:
ERECTED BY THE WIRRAL FOOTPATHS ETC. SOCIETY. BY PERMISSION OF THE COUNCIL. (The ETC. stands for "& open spaces"). This society was founded in 1888 & is still active.
The wording on the finger post varies, sometimes including the name of the society, sometimes "keep to the path", sometimes "please keep to the path". I suppose they varied by date.

Well spotted Kimpri, & what an exellent post this is
It`s not exactly street furniture but does anyone have a photograph of the old roundabout that used to be in Central Park???
Ahhh memorys
A nice old gas lamp column converted to SOX (low pressure sodium). Well spotted kimpri1. Looks like it could do with a bit of TLC
Don't know if this counts for old stuff?

REVO used to make hand grenades. I had one.
ghostly1: Yes, it must count as "old stuff". An old NWGB (remember Mr Therm ?) cabinet. I think these house either area meters and/or recording devices. This one looks to suffering the ravages of time!
Tatey: REVO did indeed make the castings (and release lever ?) for the No.36 Hand Grenade/Mills Bomb. A lot of founders and engineering works around the country churned them out for the Ministry. Another familiar grenade maker was QUALCAST the mower people. I've got a complete one made by VADIS. They are all quite collectable and some go for silly prices if they are in good condition.
May be of interest. At the top end of the park in ashville rd, poulton, entrance closest to poulton road (google maps dousent show the name of the little one way st from the park to poulton rd) near the power station there is a tall, 'wide' maroon coloured post-metal. Looks a bit like the grey one in hamilton square on the first page???
In the last picture I like the way they have a perfectly good lamp post but chose to crudely attach the flood lights to the tree.
another one same place about six there
The first one, is that a water cabinet used to fill steam rollers?? We had a feature on thoes a while ago by Pinz I think!
I am not sure what it is. I should have got another shot from the other side.
the first pic looks like water cabinet that's a excellent find kevin finity.can you see inside or get pic nice one mate.
Im sure Pinz has put a post up about these water cabinets and think he has key for one!!
i doubt he will have key for the padlock on chain mate?
My battery powered cutting disc seems to fit most padlocks......??
Oops.
bolt crops less noise replace lock easy?
No need for violence! First, up the chain a bit, get able assistant to pull the door widest, set the flash and shoot!
We need to know!

Didnt mean key to padlock...!!! Meant to cabinet, sure weve had post before!!!
As for bolt crops and grinder... We are not hoodilums here on Wiki and do not condone the use of force or wanton destruction of property to gain access for our own gains!!!
AND i was thinking of a gas axe actually!!!!
why didn't i think of that

It is in West Kirby. If you enter the park through the entrance at the end of Dunraven road (off Westbourne road) its right there next to a tree just off the path next to the lake. If I get a chance tomorrow I will get a few more shots. There is room to get shots from all round it. I would have took more at the time but the park was busy and everyone would think I was a right weirdo lol.
no worries. i will go up tomorrow need to get pics of inside?
I'm not arsed about people, they can think wot they like there the weirdos not me
Good luck, but rain tomorrow!

go 'ead joe! get in there, fella. foook the narrow-heads
I am walking that way shortly. I am half expecting to see a crowd of Wiki Wirralers congregated around it.
Here's one for your attention wiki, there is an old post box outside the Williamson art gallery in Birkenhead that bears the VR (Victora Regina) emblem so it has to be one of the very first post boxes in the country. That's if it's still there as I moved to Newcastle upon Tyne 10 years ago, hence I have no pictures sorry.Would defo be worth a look though.

im not sure
rude, you don't in public parks, so is Ashton private park or privately funded, maybe turn style is another feature??
I never thought of talking photos of the turn styles. Its making me think what else is out there that I have forgotten about.
it make you go looking just to see how meny unusual finds you can collect from one place?Ive got some more to put up later ? went into the church by park got some cool
from there..quite alot s/f round your way? thanks for puting me onto them dude
St Bridget's church that will be.
I'd like a history boff to tell us the history of the park+ how much it was to get in. And when etc
Birkenhead park the 1st public park in what? 1859 or something so Ashton may be older than that? Or just an alternative? V.interesting
It is possible that the turnstiles where only used when they where holding tennis tournaments. There are many other entrances to the park that have never had turnstiles since I can remember anyway, only the one which happens to be right where all the tennis courts are situated that Kimpri1 has photographed.
Edit: I was wrong. you did indeed have to pay to enter once(Two thirds of the way down the page).
http://hubpages.com/hub/Ashton-ParkAlso I did not know this....
It is the third oldest public park in Britain, being pipped to the post first by Birkenhead Park and secondly by Bolton
nothing on water cabinet tho nice find dude??
St Bridget's church that will be.
that the one, i like that church
What a good thread, the amount of times I've passed these cast iron fixtures and not given them a second thought.
Parkway, Meols. I suspect this is/was and electricity cabinet, generally the green colour and the manufacturer (Hardy & Padmore) would indicate this.
The company ceased production in 1967 and started in 1814.
some info
www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/articles/lucy/lucyboxes.htm
Back to the green box....New thought. It's a bit unlikely that there would be electricity required in the park. I don't know the geography there but if the box is near the fountain, it could have housed the stop cock for it and maybe irrigation for the plants and grass. Perhaps the pipes out of the sides were for hose connections?
Bri
nice find, must be more ferry mile markers (ie 1 mile)?
Well, the amount of times ive walked past that+ not noticed!!
Also, thanks for link kevinfinity-interesting read.
This Milestone (I think its atchelly Iron not stone) is on Birkenhead road on what is now considered the border between Meols and Hoylake. It says Hoylake half a mile because back in 1896 Hoylake was just the area up where the roundabout now is. The rest of what is now Hoylake was called Meols apart from a small area by Trinity road which was called Hoose. What we now know as Meols was called 'Great Meols' and sometimes still is.
This is just a boring phone box on Greenwood road Meols but to OMD fans its a bit of a shrine. This was the phone box that the band sung about on one of their earliest songs called
Red frame white light.
That might not seem that great but some hardcore fans make pilgrimages to it from around the country and even abroad.
If you don't believe me look at
this thread from OMD forums. Its almost a shrine lol.
The number is still the same too
I'd seen this a couple of months ago but couldn't remember where. I went on a mission today and found it again and got a couple of photos. It's out near Raby Mere
Great find! How has it survived! The circle should be red.
We, of a certain age, remember these well.

The circle and triangle are red - just green with stuff off the trees!!! I was just about to drive off having taken the photo when I saw the man from the house in my rear view mirror watching me. I got out of the car to reassure him that I wasn't up to no good! He was really lovely and said that the bottom plate is the original but the top is a remake. Apparently there are some that argue that the triangle should be up the other way. The house used to be a brewery? I'll have a bit more of a nose round when I get a chance. I get the feeling there's quite a bit of history going on there.
Sorry, I foolishly assumed it was still in use.
Yes, the top is wrong way up and I can see it is cut from steel sheet or similar, whereas the real thing was durable cast iron.
Do those iron railings with the curved top still exist out on the country roads of the Wirral? They were sometimes painted black and white, black uprights and white bars, and I seem to remember them at the Clatterbridge-Thornton Hough crossroads. So neat and safe when cars had dim headlamps, not necessary nowadays!
Bri
Can't find a real one but here's a drawing.
I remember the real thing but it also reminds me of toy cars and garage my brothers had as kids

As a member of the OMD forum (same username) I can say I know most of those people in the pictures!!
All together now...."Red Frame White Light, telephone box, red on grey"
In fact my website domain name is named after their 1993 album 'liberator' and I produce OMD vids for YouTube!.
Now ya know!
Ha ha wow its a small world. I found that thread on that forum a few months ago whilst I was bored trawling the outer reaches of the web. I never thought people would be intrested in the phone box.
I grew up in Meols but the nearest connection I can make to OMD is being Pete Humphreys's nephews mate. His mum and dad (Petes brother) used to run the fan club from his house in Drummond road Hoylake.

What??? You wish you were closer to Chris?????
Mmmmmmmmmmm
There ARE limits!
Those iron railings with the curved top are still in the same place, and where re-painted prior to the OPEN {GOLF} Lots of area's where cleaned up ready for that event{even the railway embankments just passed Birkenhead Park Station} which had and is again the local tip for some of the people who live around there.
I haven't been back since the '60s. Strange how one remembers these things!
Thanks for that.

I'm saying nuffink.

You mean these?
They're on US ebay now!
Crikey, they go for a few bob don't they!!!!
Was there a point where the triangle changed from flat side up to flat side down????? Or does it make a difference to what the sign means and I need to go back and read the Highway Code again. Even the toys - some are up and some are down

Just a thought or i may have read this somewhere in the past, if on the halt or give way sign the point of the triangle was pointing up, it may give the impression its ok to carry straight on, like an arrow in some weather conditions.
Without diving into the bookshelf to find a mouldy old Highway Code, I think the signs with the triangle within a circle (as shown as bri's drawing) indicate a mandatory sign. ie. YOU WILL....etc. The ones that had a triangle only on were informatory.
Early triangles were cast iron. Later ones were aluminium with "Scotchlite" reflective material on. A cast steel adaptor fitted over the pole top. There are still a few surviving ones up here. Some have been unofficially adaopted and nicely maintained - including the correct pole colours (B&W striped) - not the bland grey rubbish.
Anyone out there got a drawing of a "Tram Pinch" sign ???
Drawing ?. got photo off google
Good one Bert ! Thanks. From the look of the overhead (trolleybus but used by trams as well) is it Black Country Museum ?

This is actually a nice example of a kissing gate.
A couple that I remember - I wonder if they're still there:
at the end of Greenheys Road (Wallasey) where it turned into a footpath to Love Lane (past the allotments) there was an ancient sign saying 'No Thoroughfare'
at the top (Wallasey Road) end of St Alban's Road there was an old Hackney Carriage sign (where the bus stops are/ were!)
Also, I remember when I was very young (late 60s probably) there were some great drainpipes on the big houses on Ashville Road as it cut through Birkenhead Park! The things you spot! Wonder if they (or the houses) are still there?!

Here's one that has puzzled me for years - (no pic unfortunately !)
at Upton Station there is a structure standing on its own and looks like the base of a stack of some kind. It's been there as long as I can remember and even with the redevelopment in the immediate area it's never been demolished . Any ideas ?
First, welcome to this site; hope you find lots to interest you & maybe you have lots to contribute too.
It's the chimney base of the old water pumping station. Here's a link to it on the website of uptoncx, a long standing member of this site.
http://www.upton.cx/newwebsite/upt73.php
That's really interesting, I never knew that and I always wondered what the structure was. Thanks.
Anybody got any idea what that green box in Gayton Ave. is?

Took this photo today near Capenhurst. This curved-top style is called "Cheshire railings".
There is a roundabout being built at the Cottage Loaf junction at Thurstaston. Similar railings have just been installed where the roadworks have cut into a neighbouring field.
Description: Cheshire railings near Capenhurst
Thanks Chris. Yes, those are the ones. Looking a bit tatty. They were black uprights and white rails if I remember correctly. I suspect they were designed to show at night to mark out the country road junctions without street lights. A very sensible idea!
Brian
Thanks for that Chriskay - a long standing mystery solved !
Thanks to Kimpri1 for pointing this one out. Its an old gas lamp in port sunlight still with its internal gubbins.
That's a rare example; a good find.
Enhanced in Photoshop. The same light again but you can see inside clearer.
Even clearer! (Hope you don't mind)
The fireclay support for the mantle has been shot at! It was a pretty fragile setup, even without vandalism.
For anyone that is interested, the round cylinder is a 7/14 day wind up clock mechanism that turns the gaslight on and off morning and evening. The small diameter pipe to the left is the pilot light and the larger pipe coming off the top of the regulator and going across the lamp and up to the top section is the main gas supply controlled by the "Horstman/Newbridge timer"
Was thinking this morning looking on Google's Streetview we could scour this to find Street furniture that we do not know about. Then goto the actuall location and take proper photos ??? Obiviously i cant but maybe others can ??
not sure if this is street furniture but can anyone explain what it means
It's on the Cheshire Lines building
Looks like it is for a fire hydrant.
I'm pretty sure that S V = stop valve. 3Ft.6in. from the foot of the wall. It'll be for the incoming water to the building I guess.
any idea what this was - possibly a light
On the corner of the wall where the toilet in Argyle St were
Remember using them after coming out of the Savoy but can't remember if the toilets were ever lighted
It is a "frog". That is to say, the decorative support bracket for an old gas lamp. Most, if not all gas lanterns in Birkenhead on those frogs were "Windsor" lanterns made by Sugg Ltd.
Sugg Ltd are still in business making the same lanterns using the same tools, dies etc. Yes, you can specify gas or electric. Make sure you are sitting down if you ask "How much". Also gas mantles ain't too cheap these days either. They break reeeeeel easy !

Also looks like it goes over the edge of the kirb!
I wonder when that drinking fountain in Central Park last worked? (Did the water come straight from the lake??!!)
There was one near the entrance to Harrison Park I used to drink from in the 70s.

The Harrison Park fountain (not in use) was recently painted in black & gold. Only took the local idiots a day or so to spray paint it with white paint.
Latest grafiti is on the tennis court changing rooms " yanks $ out" what is that supposed to mean?
This pillar box might be a Victorian "Penfold" with the top knob or decoration broken off.
think that post box will be a little bit older than the first angle grinder

I have emptied every post box in Birkenhead over the years and the worst one ever is the one on Balls road with the vertical slot. There is no hopper or slope so every just sits in the floor of the box and that includes dog poo etc that the local scallies seem to find amusing.. Box 15 I think it was but it is a few years since I was in that job. There is also another old but renovated one in Ashville road by one of the park entrances.
I noticed today that there is what looks like an old iron structure/column on Barnston Road directly opposite Acre Lane in Heswall. Would like to know what it is and how old!

Some old street signs mounted on my mates shed wall
Couldn't resist...
Found this in Wimbledon St,Wallasey.Does anyone have any info' on this and any other companies that made similar paving?
Might be a bit OT but looking at those street signs, it just made me wonder, does anyone know what was the difference between a "Street" and a "Road"? I mean, why were they named one or the other, as they are / were? There must be some reason (you would think?) but if there is, I can't find it anywhere (on the mighty internets...!)
I think streets were for passageways where homes were and roads were for going between towns or a different area
think this has been asked before
makes sense to me!! cheers Derek!
To expand on the answer above, I remember an expert talking on Radio 5 about the road, street, drive etc question.
From what I remember, traditionally it was the setting that the road was in so:
Street - has house / buildings on
Road - between places
Drive - Country road driven through a forest or wood
Rise - uphill road
Cresecent - bent road
Close - a CLOSEd road (i.e. cul-de-sac)
etc
Now though developers and councils just pick whatever sounds ok!
As an aside, cos I'm bored at work, strangly the French rarely use the term cul-de-sac as it literally means "Arse of the Bag"
hi kimpri, ive sent you a p.m. thanks
There is a similar marked paving slab at the rear of Wallasey town hall.
There used to be a few of those "advert" paving stones on the seaward side pavement on New Brighton Prom. Probably long gone as the Prom has been "improved" over the years.
A privately owned phone box going to a new owner.
i wonder if this is the same one me and TC walked past yesterday and we commented on how it may get shipped abroad, i hope it stays here
It is staying in England I am glad to say!
great news
would like to know iff anyone has any old birkenhead street signs they would sell,or any other items of street furniture.thanks
This is my first posting, so please excuse me if I'm repeating earlier stuff. I am trying to build up a database of photographs of old street furniture etc (predominantly grids as cast iron lasts a long time!) bearing the names of the extinct arms of local government and utilities in the area. I have all the immediately pre-1974 Councils, although I would like some with 'Hoylake UDC' rather than 'HUDC', but would like to know if there are any Bromborough UDC/Higher Bebington UDC/Lower Bebington UDC/Bebington UDC (1934-1937 before Bebington became a Borough)/ West Kirby & Hoylake Urban District (1894–97).
Also there are some very old water utility pieces with 'BWW' and 'TWW' on them; I am assuming these are Birkenhead Water Works and Tranmere Water Works respectively. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know of a source giving the chronology of the water supply companies and their catchment areas?
Thanks very much. I'll go through that thread later. Here's a couple of examples
There are grids round the wirral with "Lanceleys Ltd Chester" or "H.Lanceley Chester cast on them.
The H.lanceley one's date from before the first world war and the Lanceleys ltd ones date from the first world war up to the mid 1950's when they stopped production.
They where the same company but became Limited company just before the first war.
Ok i'll get my coat !.
Here's a rather elegant one from Clifton Park. No name on it though.
Just spotted this on my travels this morning on Gayton Parkway in Heswall
A few more Milestone Markers is Wallasey. They have been tweaked slightly in improve the detail. I've only just noticed that they all have two mounting holes above the word 'FERRY' - one above the F, and one above the Y.
Description: Wallasey Ferry Milepost
Blanked out finger post St Oswald's Church Bidston
This was blanked out because the fender lane flyover eventually cut off the footpath to Bidston station from the bottom of School lane
On reverse side the writing is still visible pointing to Bidston train station and not blanked out
I cannot remember what site I found it on so will have to get a picture from reverse side myself
