The Morpeth buildings were definitly in Wood St, Ducko just got the title wrong, looking at the photo, Brook St was the next street along to the left. The houses you see on the left of the photo shared the entry with the houses in Brook St
What approx year would this be? Is this the part of wood street that's still there?
The photo is the part of Wood st that was the other side of Watson St, from the part of Wood st thats there now, Morpeth buildings backed on to Irving Little, the paint and paper place in Cleveland St, The shop is still there but probably under a different name. Not sure when the photo was taken, it was still like that in 1957, i think they came down , not long after.
Ah, thanks Bert!
maps 1954? and 1968?
the google map seems to have streets marked wrong
Description: 1958
Description: 1968

Cheers Derek, any chance of putting the other half of Wood st up, 1954 map.

This one Phil
I got it Bert! Cheers
My Nan and Grandad lived in the Morphos too, in the early fifties. They weren't there for long though, it was a busy old street was Wood Street, as indeed so was the whole area. It's strange to walk round it now.
My Grandad lived on Price Street in 'A big house' when he was a lad in the 30s and 40s. Somewhere near there but never did find out exactly whereabouts
I live round the corner from there now
The Morpeth Buildings, though they were in Wood St, Wood St wasn't part of their postal address, Something else I've noticed, the low numbers are the furthest away from the town hall,( first map ) i always thought the low numbers started at the town hall end.

That was usually the case as far as streets were concerned, but the 'rule' was often disregarded when it came to discrete terraces of property, or flats and tenement blocks: these were often simply numbered from the left to right as you looked at the front of the buildings.
My Grandad and Nan lived in Priory Buildings after the the Morphos and then after Grandad died she moved to Beaufort Buildings I think it was called, another block of flats at the town end of Beaufort Road. From what I can remember as a kid they were all ok and they never had any hassle not like what happens to some old folk today.
Beaufort Square, Bandy, and when they knocked it down my sister had to move out of her house in Patten St, due to cockroach infection, sold up in the end, couldn't get rid of the buggers.
I was born in the God-forgotten place in 1951. I will upload some more photos when I get used to the site a bit more.
Since talking to my older sister (by 9 years) she said that we lived in 41 Morpeth Buildings, my maternal nan at 41 Morpeth and my uncle (mum's brother and his wife) lived in 43 [a floor up].
I Lived in the Morpeth Buildings for 12 years. They were flats, and the building was green. I lived in number 29.
Hi I'm new to the forum and I'm doing my family tree Ive traced my family to the Morpeth building how come I can't view any of the photos on this thread please? Thanks

I'm new to the Wiki. Interested in any information relating to Morpeth Buildings. My mum was born at no. 33 in 1932.
Hi I’m looking for ant pice of Morpeth buildings wood at Birkenhead,my mum was reared there .many thanks annette
Here are two aerials from 1946 and 1950
I don't think so, DD.
Needs further investigation, but I think the church (pic2) is Holy Trinity, Price St and Morpeth Buildings are not in shot.
Pic 1 should have the Great Western and Watson St in view, can't pick them out?
That was me being lazy, I didn’t check properly. Where about are we after then? That was the section west of Park Street which is where I thought the paint place was.
Check Derek's first map (pic) further back, Buildings between Watson St and Cathcart St.
Edit, above I meant the North Western not Great Western
Yep, I was a block or two out, here we go (massive building!) ....
DD, is it possible to get the front elevation of the houses in Watson St, between the North Western and the Arab Arms?
Just realised I have not marked Arab Arms on my map. Thanks
Arab Arms 168 Brook Street 18 Watson Street
Think this is where it was

Not very good quality I'm afraid as this is the 1946 image. I'll try and put it through Remini sometime and see if it enhances it, sometimes it does miracles.
Thanks @Derek for confirming Arab Arms.
And another from 1950 but its from a lot further away.
Thanks, DD, excellent.
Arab Arms, it has what I assume is the year, 1882.
There are newspaper snippets, at least as early as 1860, Arab Arms, Watson St, Birkenhead.
Different location in Watson St? Knocked down and rebuilt? Top half added?
And another from 1950 but its from a lot further away.
Even better, I can now see the house I was born into. Thanks again.
1861 Mawdsley's Directory,
John Price, Arab Chief, Beer house, 16 Watson St,
1861 census,
John Price, Beer house keeper, 16 Watson St,
Joseph Perrin, Licensed Victualler, 18 Watson St (Arab Arms)

It looks like that top half is false and is just a wall. Very strange.
Pic on BFA. Again, login to zoom in.
