I propose a meet next Sunday, 27 Jan. The idea is that we should all meet at Mc.Donald's, Rock Park, at 10am. & visit (not necessarily in this order), Wirral Museum, Transport Museum, Tram Ride, the Priory, Pacific Rd. to get real close-up to the Woodside ventilation shaft.

Who's up for this? Mark's in.

Cheers, Chris.

Final plan:
Meet at Macca's, Rock Park, 10am.
Drive to Wirral Museum. (pay for parking)
Drive to Tram Museum (should be able to park free).
Tram ride to Woodside.
Walk to Pacific Rd. (weather dependent) then back to Woodside
Tram back to museum.
Drive to Priory (free parking).
Hope that suits everyone.

Cheers, Chris

I don't post much on here but i read daily. I'm actualy home next weekend for a race in Leeds and not traveling back down to London until Sunday evening so i'm intrested in going. Problem is i usualy do a long run Sunday morning from 9-11 around Arrowe, Roydon, Caldy Hill, Wekka beach to Heswall, Irby and back. I could always run earlier. Maybe you could post on here what time you estimate to be at each location and i can meet you guys there?

myself and the wife would be up for it ,but unfortunatly we dont drive either if it involves driving to the locations

Hi Jordan; I plan to go to the Wirral Museum first. (Hamilton Square). I reckon we'll be there at 10-30. After that, it becomes a bit uncertain. Hope you can join us.

Cheers, Chris.

Hi, Jonno (& Mrs. Jonno); If you're prepared to PM me your address, I'll gladly pick you up, since I'm driving from Shrewsbury anyway.

I'm as certain as I can be that this will happen. The only outdoor bit I wanted to include was a trip to the Woodside ventilation shaft, for anyone who hasn't seen it up close, because it's a really beautiful piece of Art Deco & all the decoration is done using just the one brick.
Lee; I wouldn't have thought this would clash with you working Sunday night. I reckon we'll be finished before 4pm.

Cheers, Chris.
Posted By: SoundLad Re: Wirral History group meets - 21st Jan 2008 2:26pm
okierly doke smile happy Another thing we should do one day is do the Queens Way tunnel tour happy Although a few peeps on here have already been smile
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Wirral History group meets - 21st Jan 2008 2:37pm
Going from the following time's:

- Tramway & Transport Museum: Sat & Sun 13:00 - 17:00
- Wirral Museum: Tue - Sun 10:00 - 17:00
- Birkenhead Priory: Sat & Sun 10:00 - 16:00

I propose the following itinerary:

1. Visit the Priory
2. Visit the Museum
3. Visit the Tramway
4. Visit the Transport Museum (interlinked with the Tramway anyway).

Im thinking, the priory is a good start to ensure we get there with good time, then we can spend a few hours if needs be in the museum, then we will be out by about 3ish to go to the Tramway and Transport Museum?

Not strict timing or anything, but it just ensures we get plenty of time in the two museum's and we manage to visit all the locations. We could always swap the museum visit over with the tramway visit if that sounds better to peeps but as the museum is open earlier then the Tramway, I thought that would be most appropriate.

Yes, we all have to be constantly taking pictures of one another & I'll have a large coloured umbrella that you all have to follow.

Matt; I'd rather we went to the Wirral Museum first, since in a previous post I've told Jordan we'll be there about 10-30. I reckon an hour in there will be enough for a first visit. The archives won't be open, of course. We'll have plenty of time for the rest. I only intended this to be a taster visit, since everyone may have different ideas of where they want to spend more time & can re-visit later.

Lee; yes, the Queensway tour is well worth doing.
Phone 0151 236 8602 ext.206 for details.

Cheers, Chris.

Im guessing it would be easier to park at the rock tbh and walk down? Only a 5 minutes walk?

Im not sure on the free parking, but I know everywhere around there has the meters installed nowadays cos I used to park around that area when going to Baghdad I mean Birkenhead, although up by the Inland Revenue, there is limited free parking (15 mins I think) which may be unlimited on a Sunday?

Sorry you can't make it, Lee; another time.
I've checked & the parking meters do operate on Sundays. I don't particularly want to walk from Rock Park, so I'll be driving to Hamilton Square & paying. If anyone has a chance to find out what coins the meter takes, that would be useful. From memory, we should be able to park free at the tram museum. I know parking at the Priory is free.

Cheers, Chris.
Posted By: Mark Re: Wirral History group meets - 22nd Jan 2008 8:35pm
Normal silver no copper is the norm for the meters wink

However,
opposite the courts if you have one of those Dial Parking things
you can park up to 2hrs, but again that may be free on a Sunday.

There is a couple of one ways as back streets wink
Or parking over by the priory is surely free?

O well we can finalise at the Rock wink

Totopop has his kid's on Sunday, so he is not 100% sure if he will be going. However, he deffo wants to go, and is wondering if it would be okay to bring the kids along if he can arrange it with the missus, they are 4,6 and 9, and im pretty sure it will be educational and entertaining for them.

He just wants to see if that's okay, and then he will see if he can arrange summit with the missus.

I would have thought it might be a bit much for the 4 year old (& maybe the 6 year old). I'm sure the 9 year old would enjoy it. I'll have to leave it to his judgement; he will know his kids better than anyone.

Cheers, Chris.

priory where I thought i was hearing voices in my head from left to right but it was Matty and Joe messing about, Some interesting stories about some visitors running straight out
as soon as they pop in.

Went on the Trams which was great and had a good browse around the trams museum, and played on the gambling
game machines!!! they are amazing i want one. Matty won once an all it does is give you your pennie back and let you have a free go i think?.

About me not having a camera well i do but its a camera phone so wasn't any point looking an idiot with all your

As already mentioned, thanks to Chris for showing us around these places and telling us your knowledge and memories.

Cheers to Matty for the lift and to Mark for cheering the missus up, oh and to pomp just for being there happy

Shame no-one else turned up though.

Anyway, here's some of my photos of the Wirral Museum:

I hope you all enjoyed the trip as much as I did; we must do it again some time. Having said that, every time I come up, I leave feeling a bit sad; although I haven't lived there for 50 years, I still think of it as home. Sometimes I think I should move back, then I think "well, it's only 1 1/2 hours away & where I live there aren't as many scallies & I'd miss my friends here". Thanks for the pics. so far; looking forward to seeing the videos. Anyone who wants old maps should look at www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk
Mark; I think your road should be on the Bidston map.
Here's the only pic. I took & even that's a bit out of focus.

Cheers, Chris.

Yeah, cheers Chris, really enjoyed the day out, made a rather nice change and found it all really interesting, of course you being 70 and being able to share masses of stories and histroy and having experienced many of the changes over the year's, remembering Birkenhead when it was still an "industrial" town, added to the whole experience immensely!

I think I will go visit some of the attractions again in the next year, want to go back to the priory etc...

A Little Video of ChrisKay and his Carbide lamp from our tour.

Thanks chris, Now we know it smells, and you can not buy it from the local shops, and it wont burn forever.

Thanks again. Sorry for sounding abrupt on the video i didn't mean too.

I made it old looking until the very end.
