A man suffered arm and leg injuries after he was hit by a car on a Merseyside motorway.

Police confirmed the man was hit near a bridge on the southbound carriageway of the M53 in Upton not far from Junction 2 Moreton Spur.

He was taken to hospital although his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of a Toyota - possibly the car that hit the man - stopped at the scene.

Police hope to speak to the injured man later today.

As a result of the incident a lane was closed southbound between Junction 2 Moreton Spur and Junction 3 Woodchurch.

The speed limit was reduced to 30 mph. The lane was reopened around 8am.
