Can anybody point me in the right direction of the best way to cut tree stumps down to ground level. They are from conifer tree`s and they are about a foot tall and bout the size of dinner plate round.
Tried small axe, but hardly goes through them, would a bigger fell axe do the job?

Thanks guys in Advance
Carol.

Get a bow saw, or chain saw, give me a chain saw, i'd have fun getting it down.

Would be better off digging around the stump and cutting the roots with the saw/chainsaw...

Dig around the roots then pull them out.

Thanks guys, the stumps are blocking the way of us putting fencing panels up. We`ve had the panels for couple of weeks now and need them up asap.
So just need stumps cutting down to ground level, do you think a big axe would do it?

Try it, but if you don`t get all the roots ,and it`s still alive it will only damage your fence later on wooops smile

Hire a stump grinder. Don't think you can buy caustic soda anymore, another good thing stopped by the Health and Safety, I believe.

Hi you can still get it online

Thanks for that, do you know the website as I tried all over earlier in the year.

Sorry June, it wasn't caustic soda , It was a very strong weedkiller I used to use that has been withdrawn, looked like damp salt. Will remember proper name hopefully as it was really good. Just thought, it was Sodium Chlorate!
Me again, just found some on Amazon but very expensive, it's imported.

you can still buy caustic soda, i lob it down my drains every so often

as for the stump, once its cut to ground level, drill it full of holes and fill them up with a product called "SBK" this will in time encourage the stump to rot away

Removing a tree stump quickly = stump grinder OR a great deal of hard work with a chainsaw/ axe etc

Removing a tree stump chemically = allow at least a year, maybe two, but it can be done. In my experience SBK is too slow (since the 'Elf & Safety people made them take out the really active components). Caustic soda will work if you use a flat bit drill on a strong electric drill and drill many holes as deep in the stump as you can. You can pack those holes with solid caustic or concentrated liquid eg

http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Caust...Base-_---_-Boots%20Caustic%20Soda%20500g

or try any good plumbers merchants eg Howarths in Wallasey

An alternative is to fill the drilled holes with battery acid (36% sulphuric acid) which I obtained by drilling a hole in the cases of couple of old batteries after I had charged them up (charging concentrates the acid).

BE CAREFUL with these chemicals - gloves and goggles - they are highly corrosive

Using either caustic or battery acid you must plug the drilled holes after they have been filled - corks &/ or putty - and wrap the stump top with a plastic sheet tied on with string etc. Does not look pretty but it is needed for safety.

I Had 20 conifers to cut down.I Trim them down then got a chain saw on them and then dug round the stump. I managed to cut the roots round the stumps then drag them out. Now I got a lovely Green lawn with nice colourful Boarder.Cause I Now Have Lots of sun and light.

A couple of sticks of dynamite on each stump will do the trick.
Oh - wait - H&S nazi's have stopped that sort of stuff smile

When I need to take any out I dig round them, cut the main root, feed a big chain underneath, attach it to the 4x4 and drive away.

Did try it once with a Suzuki SJ410, not quite as successful laugh

Doc

Problem I found was that using the chainsaw in the earth around the stump roots played Hell with the chain - basically knackered it

I use an axe

Or an old angle grinder

Wouldn't use a chainsaw, if it hits a stone it's going to hurt.
