"Free" routers are never that great.

I replaced the free Netgear one that came with Virgin with a TP link branded one. Much better wireless coverage, better security and built in print server and media centre support.

Have a look on Amazon for their products.

I had a 7 year old Sky router. I applied for the free Sky
Wireless booster but was told I needed a new router first
which they sent free of charge. It is the SR102 (the SR101
had some problems - Google it). The 102 seems OK but not much
different than my old one. I'm still waiting for the wireless
booster however - they are awaiting new stock and I'm on
the waiting list.
I think you can still order a 102 but they might charge £69
for it which means it's worth thinking of a better
non Sky router. You would need to check that any you bought
would be compatible with Sky.

I have just signed up with Sky and have one of the newer routers which they now call a hub. It works great. The new HD Sky boxes comes with built in Wifi which works great.

My experience is they will only give out new routers if yours has broken or to new customers.

If you have been with Sky for over 12 months ask for one and if they refuse tell them you will cancel. It;s worth a try because if they think they will lose your custom they might offer you one!
