thanks for the link reddraggon, but i need someone to repair it not me lol, i am looking for person who does p.c repairs, thanks anyway

why does it need a new fan?
If its an old laptop the design makes it awkward.
And that can up the price for a £3 fan.

if you can say why it needs a fan, there may be other solutions.

hi mark, the laptop is 4yrs old, it was very noisy, i took it in to a repair shop, they said common fault with this model was excessive dust build up ,it was agreed if needed new fan would be installed whilst stripped down,as it was not the easiest to access, collected it they said just needed cleaning, but sometimes the fitting that houses the fan wears, took it home just the same noise, dosen't get hot, just noisy, thanks

was quoted £45 if fan fitted, paid £40 for cleaning, had a row as it still the same. thanks

Ouch, £40 just for cleaning it, please tell me that wasn't my place or someone is in for a b*ll*cking, especially as it didn't fix it.

We keep loads (over a thousand) used fans/heat sinks in for the older laptops, and they're not hard to fit, why on earth you wouldn't change it during the strip down, or redo it if it didn't cure the fault I have no idea.

i've got a HP Pavillion DV7 17.3" laptop (my guess is the same range as yours) and i've had ZERO problems with my 'fan' in 4 years... the ONLY thing that's gone wrong on mine was the charger randomly stopped working about a year ago, got a new one from HP, no problems otherwise...

hi jawhide,do you find yours is incredibly noisy does not get hot now it has been cleaned, but can;t hear the telly over it .

Noise
This can be due to an object getting attached to the fan blades. Again this could be a build up of dust.

if its not dust it could be a poorly fitted fan or a generic fan. If there is a power lead from the fan to the motherboard what can happen are the wires or a retaining clip to lean back and touch the fan blades eventually cutting through the cable / clip in time. If its a zipit tag then it wont harm anything. But if its a cable powering the fan it will eventually cutting the power to the fan which would kill the power and potentially over heating the processor. worst case overheat and damaged.

1. Power Off the Laptop.
2. Power on the Laptop is the noise there from pressing the power button?

That exercise will help to diagnose if the noise comes on after boot up which means heat is part of the problem.

As you say you can not watch tv, so this cant be down to dust alone.

You didnt say how long ago the repair was done, and how often do you use the laptop.

You say it was agreed that the fan should be replaced, but they only cleaned it.
The fan should have been replaced if it was stripped that far back. The fans cost a few pound. you have paid for it to be opened up and cleaned. I feel to fix the problem your going to have to pay again for it to be opened up again.

Send a private message to the Dr and he can advise you on a price. Laptops can be like opening a can of worms.
