I want to connect a hdd to a router (so files can be accessed from both pc's, without the need for both pc's to both be switched on) that does not have usb ports on it, I have been looking at something like this
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/soho-netw...ge-via-usb-with-addonics-nas-adapter/322 does any one know any other way to do it cheaper without changing routers, as am with sky and I can't get user name and password off router.
Thanks
You're looking for a NAT hard drive. You want one with ethernet capabilities and you just plug it in to one of the spare ethernet ports. They are expensive though as they require a small onboard computer to power them and their hardware-based-software.
You can get NAT enclosures as well that you supply the hard drives for, but again they are expensive. The transfer speeds suck on all NAT drives so bear that in mind.
Thanks, looks like i will have to try to get my user name and password from my sky router some how and change routers.
you would probily be best with a NAS box it will just plag into your network port on your router and show up in windows as a network drive they go for between £30 and £200 plus the price of the hard disc heres a cheap one on ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5-SATA-...iveEnclosures_RL&hash=item415e8a7aa5you would just have to take your usb hard disc apart take out the disc and put it in the nas box
Gave a look at western digital passport may be useful

when you say take out the disc do you mean open the hdd up, or just take out hdd from my caddy and put it in this one
The second one.
You can rip user/password from sky routers it's just a pain in the ass and there's no guarantee everything will work with a new router.
Thanks, I will get one of these ordered from ebay.
