Is it a DVD writer? The only reason I ask is early (and maybe some more recent) DVD writers were usually either DVD+ or DVD-, two different types of discs each wont work in the other types burner.

What discs are you trying? CD's, DVD's, DVD-DL's, etc.

Rather than throw your discs away I have an old DVD +/- you can have if you want it and use both.
Posted By: johncon Re: disc drive problem - 10th Sep 2011 5:20pm
how does that work then ?
Posted By: TheDr Re: disc drive problem - 10th Sep 2011 5:25pm
You just swap the drives over, or if you can get your machine to me I'll do it, it only takes a couple of minutes.

Most drives can use both discs.

Check the device manager to see whether there is an issue with the driver
If the device manager indicates there is an issue with the device, you may be able to resolve the issue by uninstalling and then reinstalling it. To do this, follow these steps:

1.Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2.On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
3.Click the drive that uses the driver that you want to remove.
4.On the Action menu, click Uninstall.

When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.
5.On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.

If you can't follow instructions like that (very clearly written down in numerical order..) we're going to have a hard time helping you mate.

Have you tried burning CD's?
Posted By: johncon Re: disc drive problem - 18th Sep 2011 12:09pm
yes it worked in the past but now it just says no disc in drive
Posted By: TheDr Re: disc drive problem - 18th Sep 2011 2:15pm
If you follow Willo's instructions that will tell you if it's set up, you don't need to know anything about computers to do it, just follow what is written, the computer will do the rest.

If still no luck it sounds as if your drive may be reaching the end of it's life and need swapping, the offer of a replacement still stands.
