I had a notification for a necessary Win7 update - so I said OK, download & install. Update was indicated as downloaded OK etc but then indicated a restart was needed.

I responded with OK - and went for my dinner. An hour later the screen indicated

Configuring Service Pack
30% completed
Do not turn off your computer

Another hour later it STILL SAYS THE SAME

Humm - summat is "stuck" I think
The circulating / rotating widget or whatever is still moving but WHAT DO I DO NEXT????

Just sit & wait?
Pull the plug?
What could be the consequences of pulling the plug?

(. . . and yes, I'm using a different machine now)

Try ctrl-tab in case a pop-up has disappeared behind.

And after that try minimising for the same reason.

I've come across allusive pop-ups recently, only waiting for an "ok" to be hit.

Ctrl-Tab did nothing

How can I minimise when all I have is the blue background screen with-

Configuring Service pack
30% Complete
Do not turn off your computer

and then Windows 7 Home Premium at the bottom

Been like that 4 hours now

The question is - what to do if it just continues like that???

If I just pull the plug will it all start up again so that I can roll back to the last Save Point (which it made before it started this ******** procedure ??

Dude the thing has crashed, just pull the plug and it'll attempt to reinstall once you hit the desktop and reboot.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the update.

ex0 - I am sure you are correct about the crash

I will pull the plug soon and see what happens

I will also NOT try to get the SP1 for a while.

OK, pulled the plug then restarted

On restart it went directly to the message

Configuring Service pack
30% Complete
Do not turn off your computer

BUT THEN carried on configuring the Service pack
and finally gave my usual screen + a message SP1 is now installed

******** Microsoft
