Have you tried rebooting the router and computer? To reboot the router, simply turn the power off to it for10 - 15 seconds and then restart. Sometimes it can take 2 attempts to flush the DNS.

What is the ISP? They could be having DNS issues, so you could be worth givin them a ring to double check, before spending a couple of hours trying to fix it, only to find it was a network issue on their side.

tried all that, i am on hold on phone with sky, have been for an hour

Can you go to this address? This a different way of accessing www.google.com.

http://209.85.143.99

edit: And stop using IE. Switch to Firefox or Chrome (or hell, anything).

ues can access google from that link, no problem, but can not do any searches
Posted By: MattLFC Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 7:33am
Well according to Sky's service status page, there is no issues at present; however there is reports on Sky User of people suffering various DNS issues. So could be a Sky problem, have you managed to speak to them yet, or are you still in a queue?

still on hold, and the stupid music they play is doing my head in

Deffo sounds like the DNS is screwed somewhere then; what router is it? You could possibly change the routers DNS servers to OpenDNS, if you know the model, we can advise how.

i carnt access that site, the only site i can access is wiki wirral
Posted By: ex0__ Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 7:41am
That's cause Sky are complete w ankers when it comes to changing anytihng to do with the router they give out. You can't even change to another router without literally sniffing and then cracking your user/password combo because Sky won't give it out in any circumstances.
Posted By: ex0__ Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 7:42am
Hey Willo, have you tried clicking tools and then clearing history/temp internet files/cache? There should be a button there somewhere that lets you do that though I'm not sure what its called.
Posted By: MattLFC Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 7:44am
Right, to change the nameservers in XP:

Go to start menu - network connections - on the left hand sub menu choose "View network connections" - right click on the connection you using (usually the wireless one on laptops) and select properties - on the first page, scroll down to "Internet Protocol TCP/IP, highlight it, and the click the properties button - Then change the DNS server option to "use the following DNS server addresses" and input these :

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Then use the flushdn option for safety, and restart all browsers etc (close every browser window before opening a new one) - this should work, providing the router does not override it.

As ex0 says, Sky have locked down their routers, so it appears you can't change it on the router side (more preferable way).

When i came in from work about half hour ago had same problem back on now booted windows up on it and have got it back on now,i m with virgin
Posted By: ex0__ Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 10:35am
He's such a noob, eh Willo!

Just head back into Network Connections and right click the connection you're using and click 'Properties', choose TCP/IP from the list and click Properties again and choose 'obtain dns addresses automatically' instead of the option you've got selected at the moment.

@Matt: Lol.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 10:37am
i have tried this, but the connection icon i was originally using has vanashied
Posted By: MattLFC Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 11:29am
Very strange; reboot the computer, and as it comes out of POST (before the windows logo comes on) press F8 repeatedly, until you are presented with a list of options.

Select the "last known good configuration" - it's a stab in the dark, but its worth a try and may prove a simple fix to get your network connection back.
Posted By: ex0__ Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 11:45am
Won't work if he's already rebooted the lappy since the network connection dissapeared and I'll bet that he has. Last Good Config is overwritten by the latest working boot to desktop frown
Posted By: MattLFC Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 11:48am
Indeed, no harm in trying though. Seems strange the network disappearing, a DNS config change won't have caused that (could have locked you out of the internet until the change was reversed though).

You haven't knocked the wireless adapter off have you? Using an FN key on the keyboard or a physical/dedicated key/button on the laptop itself?

finally got through to sky after 5 hours on hold, they say, the whole of the UK sky broadband was of, due to major outage, but lappy still wont connect, so am going to format and reinstall windows
Posted By: Snodvan Re: weird laptop problem - 6th Jun 2011 12:27pm
That sounds a bit drastic to me. The problem MUST be fixable on the machine "as is". I have seen the girls in TheDrs place achieve wonders with a few taps on the keyboard and I am sure Mark can guide you in the same way

Whoever you spoke to lied, I'm on Sky and not had any problems.

Not sure why you're formatting the machine to fix a dns issue, you'd be better off uninstalling the wireless device and reinstalling drivers for it. That way you're starting fresh without the format.

I'm with sky and it's only ever went off the day I got it, cos I didn't put the fillter in, but it's work great now.

Indeed, formatting the thing and re-installing Windows is a bit drastic! 99% of Windows problems are fixable, one way or another, and 99% of the time, they don't require a re-install!

If you want me to take a look at it later, bring it with you.
