The PSN has been more or less in tatters since "Anonymous" Decided to attack the network and all of Sony's sites due to the SCEA vs George Hotz Case that wrapped up last week. After Anonymous Stopped attacking the PSN it's been unstable, even for US/JP users since. Who knows how long it 'll take to stabilize it

How do you go after a multi-billion dollar corporation? The best way is DoS, if you can do this, you can cause allsorts of murder for that company (and its reputation). Im not saying I agree with it, as I have to deal with DoS attack mitigation on a regular basis, but it seems the best way to me to get at someone.

Btw, for an outage this large, it won't be just one person, it will most likely be a DDoS consisting of thousands of users, hence the network is down; the easiest thing to do in that case, is to null-route all traffic until you can get the mitigation hardware configured.

It's still down but if you also own a 360 xbox live multiplayer is free till Monday. I've been too busy with a Twin Famicom for the outage To really affect me. Plus some capcom PS3 games won't work without a connection (stupid DRM measure) Shame really considering Portal 2 has come out with the PS3 version getting a free PC and MAC version download code with steamworks support and cross platform play/chat as well as cross cloud saving in every copy.

Sony officials have yet to issue an ETA for when the PlayStation Network (PSN) will be back up and running however, a source inside PlayStation Universe is claiming that U.S. and Europe servers will be back online by Tuesday.

Error message 80710A06 began on Wednesday. Sony noted that they were aware that “certain functions” of PSN were down. Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media at Sony, Patrick Seybold then announced on Thursday that Sony was investigating why the network was down and Seybold also stated the network would be down for “a day or two”.

By Friday many gamers were annoyed when Seybold announced that the Network was still down, and that Sony purposely shut the network down due to “external intrusion” that hit PSN and the company’s Qricity service.

Sony has yet to divulge any details into what exactly the “external intrusion” was, however there have been unconfirmed reports that the group called “Anonymous” was behind the attack. A hack activist group, “Anonymous” previously targeted Sony with alleged denial-of-service attacks. However “Anonymous” has denied any responsibility into the PSN being down.

Saturday on Seybold released a blog on Sony’s PlayStation website announcing that Sony is going to be taking extra time to rebuild the networks infrastructure making it better than it was before.

PlayStation 3 users who stream Netflix(usa only) can still access their instant que and view movies through their PS3. Gamers looking to play online will have to wait until Sony finishes addressing the problem.

Anon0ps released their own statement saying they had nothing to do with it, but some anons did say they had bots attacking infrastructure. See below from irc:

<ex0> any news on PSN being down?
<+szniav> was 2 guys in here earlier saying they had zombies attacking
<+szniav> not able to confirm though. watch traffic reports from botnet trackers tomorrow i guess.

Seems the PSN Network was breached by a small team that leached user information on 77mil users.

Sad thing is Sony knew what had happened a week ago and left their networks offline for contractors to perform security auditing. Gives the impression they don't have any idea how it happened, simply that it did in fact happen. Nice oshocked

Looks like it was a really nice hack actually, reading from this page: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/gx6o4/im_a_moderator_over_at_psxscenecom_the_real/

Here's to hoping Sony didn't have those passwd's stored in cleartext.
