Hi all, my first post here.
Below is a copy and paste of a guide I wrote on http://www.PlanetRock.com Forum some time ago

===========================================================
To start.
Trust www.Majorgeeks.com for shareware and freeware programs. I do.

Start page. http://www.majorgeeks.com/

The stuff in the middle is the latest updates to the large list of shareware and freeware programs that Majorgeeks hosts. Every single one is checked by the site owners for hidden programs, toolbars and malware.

The Left side bar is the headings where the FILES, that can be downloaded are.

To much choice?
OK on the Right hand side is a smaller sidebar called INFO.

Read New? Start Here.
Want to find a program? Then go to Top Freeware Picks.

Majorgeeks also has a support Forum. It is populated by geeks.

Basic Computer maintaince advice here from one of the Co-owners of Majorgeeks here. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650

What Programs do I use?

Microsoft Windows Firewall. Comes with windows XP and Vista. Plus a Firewall in my Router. Only use one on your computer, plus one on your router if you use one.

Microsoft Windows Defender. It is free. It might be installed on your computer already, but it is available here.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Defender_d4466.html

Anti-Virus. Only use one. I use AVG Free Edition. Majorgeeks recommends 3 different ones.

My favourite little program is Winpatrol. It allows you to select which items should start-up with the computer, also allows you to control which Internet Explorer add-ons or Active-x controls to keep or get rid off.

Another good program for spring cleaning your Hard Disk is CCleaner.

HTH's someone.
