Nintendo said it was "doing everything possible" to keep up with demand.

Its push to fill the shelves in time for Christmas will see it ship an extra 3.5 million consoles globally. It is not known how many extra consoles will make it to UK shelves.

Sony and Microsoft wish they had this problem lol...

I see the Wii is now nearly a million sales ahead of the 360, which was launched a whole year before it, and has amazingly sold more then double the PlayStation 3!

not wanting to cause another argument but i see the wii as a fad, the next in thing to have. no doubt its a good console, i've played a few time on my mates, great fun. after christmas though i can see a steady decline

I see your point, but getting on for 3 yrs into the 7th gen now, and the wii is top, i dont see either the 360 or the ps3 threatening to uproot it at number 1 spot in the next year or so.

Also a LOT of people who want (including myself) have been unable to get hold of them due to demand outrunning supply, so dont expect sales to dry up as quick as you might think.

Sold a million more Wii's thans XBOX 360's, what do you expect at the nearly half the price. its pocket money price for some people.
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Wii Facing Xmas Crisis - 15th Nov 2007 12:58am
Not just price though Waddi, the 360 has sold barely 3 million units worldwide this year, the Wii has sold in excess of 7 million, BIG difference lol.

The 360 sales have been practically dead tbh, in the last 6 months, they have been stuck in the 12 - 13 million unit region, the Wii has gone from number 2 with just over 8 million units sold to number 1 with nigh on 14 million units sold.

Sales of the 360 seem to have come to an end, obviously excluding a bit of Xmas increase, whereas Wii sales are stronger then ever due to more and more publicity and popularity.
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Wii Facing Xmas Crisis - 15th Nov 2007 1:06am
Ay, the Wii is £180, the 360 is £199 for the Core or £249 for the Premium, hardly a massive difference in price, and certainly you wouldnt go and buy the Wii if you really wanted the 360 just because its a few quid cheaper lol.

Its selling on merit I believe. Obviously the price makes it attrative too of course, but credit where its due, Nintendo are pissing Microsoft and Sony off big time right now.

the core package is totally useless tho if u want to play online as i found out to my expense lol... sayin that tho, u cant play online yet on the wii (which will boost sales too when that comes in i imagine, and possibly the reason nintendo have held off implementing it yet as i'm sure they could have done it if they really wanted to by now)
Posted By: AX_125 Re: Wii Facing Xmas Crisis - 15th Nov 2007 12:46pm
I wouldn't buy a wii if i wanted to play computer games, but i would buy one to have a quick half an hour blast with friends/family.

Fantastic bits of kit, fingers crossed the success isn't short lived.

good point Matty, I was only comparing it against the price of an elite. only 360 worth getting imho.

Lmao, I dunno anymore me, I never take any interest in consoles, although I have wanted a Wii since it was announced as the Revelution a few years back... dunno why at that time though lol.

So I dunno whats what anymore, lost track of all these 360's varients, and the PS3 is getting bad too, dunno why they dont just release one varient and stick with it, the idea with consoles in my day as opposed to PC's was that you bought the console and they wouldnt keep replacing it/upgrading it, it would be good for 5 years...

Things have changed hehe.

I think if you are a serious gammer then the wii isnt for you but if you are after good family fun then the wii cant be beaten. We got mario carts and some steering wheels for ours yesterday and had a scream and we were still playin at midnight.

I think the Xbox might be going along the right route, it is trying to cater for the social gamer with the movies and guitar heroes etc while it still has a strong strangle hold on the serious gamers.

I was in game today and there were about 100 people in the queue, all with xbox games, wouldn't suprise me if they start outselling wii's in the near future.
Posted By: Rhobit Re: Wii Facing Xmas Crisis - 2nd Jan 2009 11:57am
The difference is the way the business models are being run for each company. The xbox is a loss leader, selling at a loss to attempt to recoup on games sales (which I beleive it's doing very admirably on). Furthermore, because the console is aimed at more hardcore gamers, the number of them owning the console will eventually plateau and sales will slow down, as they appear to be doing.

The Wii is simply a more accessible platform for non-gamers (giving Nintendo more people to sell the console to). It's entirely socially based, and IMO the majority of the games available for it are naff if you're playing on your own.

I'm not suprised that as more people come into contact with playing the Wii, that more and more people will buy one.

Ive played them all....

Wii does nothing for me, doesnt appeal to me in the slightest. I can do without the "Cutesy" childish graphics and games.

PS3 - What a console. Graphics are far superior to the 360 when setup correctly. Any game reviews always seem to compare standard ps3 graphics with the better settings on the 360. No idea why? One game alone sets the Playstation ahead of the 360, Gran Turismo.

XBox 360 - Never liked it. Would never buy one. Only good thing is my bro has one, and so it seems does everyone else in the world, meaning good online play. If it was the other way round though, and everyone had a ps3, it would be a very very different kettle of fish.

Craig my son, the only decient Sony product was the Playstation 1.

The X-Box have taken the console generation by storm, playstations are full of crappy games, i mean wtf? you used to goto the local corner shop for bread and they`d be selling some unheard of titles for the ps2???

The xbox is farrrr more superiour than sonys feeble and greedy overpriced piece of crap and all the titles out for it are "proper" games, not just some rubbish coded up to make playstation look good because it has "lots more titles"

Give me xbox anyday!

mad OH whilest on the subject, you can CLEARLY see the CRAPPY BLOCKY graphics still in the ps3 games mad
Ps3 ps2 are turd!

Ben Heckendorn over at Engadget has just posted pics and details about his second generation Xbox 360 laptop. Apparently this one is thinner and lighter and sports some essential upgrades. If you’re interested in (seriously) voiding your warranty then stay tuned to Engadget because he’s also working on an in-depth tutorial on how to build your own. Scary.

Freeview TV, Vista and Xbox 360 - Part 2

My endeavors in getting my Windows Vista PC talking to the Xbox 360 have at last made some progress. After trying four different TV tuners I’ve finally struck one that works under Vista. To be fair technically the first three tuners also worked under Vista in the sense they had digital tuners in addition to their analog ones — and it was the analog portion that doesn’t work under Vista.
Anyway, the Hauppauge Win TV-PVR 500 MCE ($250 from this website) is Vista certified and worked a treat.

Installation couldn’t have been simpler, I plugged it into a vacant PCI slot, booted Vista which then detected it, installed the appropriate drivers (no disc required) and was ready to go. I fired up Media Centre which promptly detected the fact I had a new tuner card and ran me through the tuning process. It even detected the dual tuner functionality and asked me if I wanted to tune both of them.

With this done I fired up the Xbox 360 in the lounge (which is connected wirelessly to my Airport Extreme wireless router), hit the Media Centre button on the remote that came with the Xbox and selected Live TV. It worked perfectly; I could record one channel while watching another, pause and rewind live TV all from the comfort of my Xbox 360 environment. The only thing missing is an EPG (electronic programming guide) so I could actually find out when my favourite TV shows were on. Who’d have thought the various TV stations in this country wouldn’t like us all to know exactly when they’re scheduling their content?

Getting back to the tuner, what the Hauppauge doesn’t have however is any kind of digital tuner, which means it’s no good for my Freeview aspirations. Fortunately the kind folk at Ingram Micro who’ve supplied the PVR-500 also sent through a couple of USB-based Vista-ready digital tuners which I’ll be trying as soon as Mr Sky-installer comes and puts a dish on the side of my new house.

Instant messaging comes to Xbox 360

When Microsoft roll out the Xbox 360 Fall update — which will of course be the Spring update for us southern hemisphere types — it’ll allow Xbox LIVE users to instant message contacts on a PC via their Xbox. As of May 7 Windows Live Messenger and Xbox LIVE will become one big happy family merrily chatting away via voice, video or text. Ironically it’s the text version that’ll cause keyboard-less Xbox gamers the most grief, but never fear consolers, you’ll soon be able to get your QWERTY on too when Microsoft release their teeny tiny keyboard. It attaches to your existing controller and looks pretty sweet to us. We’ll let you know for sure once we get hold of a review unit.

ere’s the list of other updates the "Fall" update will provide:

- A richer Achievement notification pop-up will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.

- Enhanced family settings features for Xbox LIVE communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.

- A new Xbox LIVE Marketplace blade lets Xbox LIVE members access the content they seek from one place on Xbox LIVE.

- Updates to Xbox LIVE Arcade allow owners to quickly see which Xbox LIVE Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox LIVE members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded ‘Tell a Friend’ capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.

- A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox LIVE Arcade games.

- New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

- Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.
