Microsoft supports Windows 2000 until June 2010 iirc, which it will then become completely abandoned by Microsoft, and they will not even provide support for corporate users.

Support was originally supposed to cease altogether this year, but because of slow take up rates with regards Windows 2003, they have placed 2000 into an extended support phase.

Windows 2000 is the ultimate OS from Microsoft, it is so secure and stable. But having said that, XP is fast approaching the same level of stability and although it will never be as secure, it is close to it.

Overall though, XP is the better OS to use nowadays, things like IE7, the revised start menu and a couple of other tweaks make it's GUI generally ahead of 2000.

2000 still the best overall though.

I used to have a Windows 2000 Server for MP3's and the best uptime for it was 1 Year 56days smile thats gotta be a record...

I rebooted a Linux (Fedora Core 3) server a few weeks back, that was sitting idle on a rack and I had forgotten about. It had an uptime of 576 days when it was rebooted, but it hadnt been used for anything for well over a year (it got dropped when I went migrated to a more powerful server, and just forgotten about).

I currently have a streaming media Pentium III (Fedora Core 4), which is in production, streaming upto 70Mbps worth of audio/video at peak via Steamcast, Shoutcast, NSV and Icecast which is fast approaching one year uptime.

For a production server, thats pretty impressive. I think the longest I had a production server was 463 days, but it wasnt serving many customers in that time (it only got rebooted cos the DC had a power failiure lmao).

smile
