Good to see pictures from before the world went mad and stopped youngsters enjoying themselves with exciting play.

I particularly like the one of the slides; nothing to stop you falling off. There is a notice saying something is "STRICTLY PROHIBITED", but I can't read what it is, so at least a nod in the direction of H&S. wink

It also has 'Girls Only' written on the side of the nearest slide. laugh

Would they have been metal or wood to slide down at that time, I can't remember that far back ?
Posted By: Salmon Re: Couple of old pics - 2nd Jun 2014 11:24am
I thought the girls only was put there by the girls themselves.
I think I remember them as metal and recall they got very hot in the sun.

Cross Lane Moreton. Where was this? I assume that like Station road becoming Pasture road when Moreton became part of Wallasey, the name was changed or just disappeared?
Posted By: Greenwood Re: Couple of old pics - 20th Aug 2014 10:41pm
It's a long shot, but there's a Cross Lane leading off Leasowe Road by Lidl - perhaps it extended much further in those days?

As Greenwood says, Maybe Cross Lane is the one with the dogs home off Leasowe Road.
I`ll delve more tomorrow.

Entitled Ringobells, Wallasey Village. Is it a pub on the end or just an advert?. Bert... You may know.

Pub, not just an advert, corner of School Lane I think, cottages known locally as Ring O' Bells cottages.
In 1892 the pub was tied to Yates & Company, Landlord, Thomas Titley found himself before the magistrates for opening on a Sunday.

The corner of School Lane and Wallasey Village is correct. This is the Breck Road end before Wallasey Village was widened.
The pub stood opposite the Cheshire Cheese pub, which is still there.
Houses were built on the land that would have been behind the Ring O'Bells. They were subsequently demolished (bomb damage?)to be replaced by the low rise apartments that are there now.

Thanks Guys, I recognise the place now. I think Bert has posted a map a few times of the two pubs.
Just found a copy.

I remember my dad telling me he carved his name in the sandstone on the right, close to the bridge. They put netting over the rocks now to help spread the plant life so I doubt if his name will ever be seen. I used to be the "can lad" when they had the huts by Sherlock Lane bridge. Cooking the dinners etc and running to the shops. I used to make a few bob doing that. We were all covered in mud, I used to get the job of scrapping the mud of the workers boot as they would weigh a ton with so much mud on them. Ahh, the good old days. Riding in Jcb`s and walking on the tracks of those big cranes.

I was based at the materials testing lab at the bottom of old
Gorsey Lane.Spent many an hour testing the concrete used in constructing the Sherlock Lane Bridge.I was very fond of the small bakers at the top of the lane!Probably saw you in your early career.Did your dad work for McAlpines?
