Does anyone know of where to get a list of these clubs that were on Wirral.
I have passed or seen on maps Liberal and Conservative clubs (don't know whether there were Labour clubs though)
dotted here and there in areas where you wouldn't expect them to be
eg in Borough Rd, Seacombe I was told a building just up from the Embassy used to be a Conservative club.
Also I don't know if originally you had to be a party member to go in them.
Do they give us an inkling of where they were was considered a winnable seat by that party at the time of being built?
(don't know whether there were Labour clubs though)
There used to be a Labour Club on Church Road (opposite where the P.A used to be).
Re. the Conservative club on Borough Road- remember that back in the day St Pauls Road was an affluent road, housing Doctors, Lawyers and the likes...
My Father was a member of the Oxton Conservative Club in Storeton Road. From memory it was situated adjacent to the Arno. Building wasn't there last time I was passing. I "think" it might have been an old school at some point ??
Liberal club Church Road, Higher Tranmere, between Dial Road and the Bee Hive pub, the site has still got a club building in use now but no longer as the Liberal club. Conserative club Old Chester Road Lower Tranmere, directly opposite the top of Union Street on the corner of Downham Road, Was a large red brick building during the 50's, then it was pulled down and the south end social club was built on the site, this closed down and the building was torched, the land which was the Conserative clubs bowling green is still there.
I remember a right wing party, I would venture neo-nazi called the CITIZEN'S DEMOCRATIC PARTY, which held meetings in the Seacombe Ferry Hotel in the early 1970's. I do not mean that awful dive called the Seacombe Ferry, which may be more familiar to most of the oiks on here, but instead the old Victorian hotel. They also held meetings in the Albion in New Brighton.
Oh yes of course! The tracky suit wearing , cider drinking, dope smokers, among us would hasten to deny it, but Seacombe, was and is, home to intelligent people.
Labour Club, The York Hotel, Grange Rd,
Liberal Club, Claughton Rd, opposite Asda car parks.
Also I don't know if originally you had to be a party member to go in them.

Thought-provoking thread this Derek. Who funded these clubs? We know that not many people are actually members of Political parties, so has membership declined over the years?
We had our wedding reception (back in 1993) at the Conservative Club, Borough Road, Seacombe. Neither of us can remember why there, though? It was not even local to us then as we lived in Tranmere so either somebody we knew was a member there and was able to book the venue or it was cheap...lol
Plusone thinks it was the V.A.N.S.A club- no idea what that stands for....off for a google...

When my Dad was a member of the Connie Club, My Mum was only aloud to go once a year, I think it was at New Year. Lynda Chalker was the only woman aloud in the club on other nights!

Women weren't allowed upstairs but the Connie's later Vanser was a social club. It was the name of the owners john rebabs who owned it. I lived around the corner.

Well its certainly in Village Road, Oxton near junction with Rosemount now and was purpose built @1900 - the new village end as we call it... (old original village was near St Saviours/Carnarvon Castle)..
Wondering about your club now - maybe it was Prenton Cons ?

I think most of these clubs mentioned may well be over 100 years old and originally you had to be a member of its party to go in
