Where on the Wirral am i?
I have just under 120 pictures of the wirral in days gone by,
and i wanted to share them with you. There all at least 50+ years
and in Black and white.
So i thought that if anyone has a modern picture of the same place to get some comparisons up, of how its changed.
Or 50 years in is it just the same ?

Your right Mark, 42 looks like West Kirby station, but I am wondering where the old joint line is, as it should be visable, but isnt???
I agree with Andy about 45 and 46.
47 is a bit of a mystery, it looks like it could be an ex-military or police mans club or similar. It could just be aco-incindence that thos gentlement are seated outside that building though. Im pretty sure it says Home not Hume on the building. The building to the right also looks very modern, so I would assume the photo is within the last 40 or so years.
wonder if its hume hall in port sunlight

51 is hoylake. the little white building othe left is the toilets
Id say:
48 - Frankby Road, looking towards Greasby.
49 - Lady Leverhulme Art Gallery, in Port Sunlight Village.
50 - Where the Kingsway tunnel is now. But when that photo was taken it was the Seacombe branch of the Wirral Railway. If memory serves me correctly, on the approce road to the tunnel, it used to be a train station called "Liscard & Poulton" and was in a cutting, the same cutting which is used for the Kingsway Tunnel approach road.
51 - West Kirby, where Morrisons and the Marine Lake is now, they would have been just down the road from that shot. If you go along the prom now, you will notice what I mean, also the prom comes to an abrupt end where that building is located on the very left of the photograph.
52 - Between Meols and Hoylake, along the prom, where the tennis courts are now.

sorry, repost, my browser wouldnt reload
There is a new building built infront of it (victoria wine or threshers), bigger trees, and the church inself has had a lot of extension work. my photo doesnt do it justice, the steeple doesnt seem to have glass windows in it but it does. its what I get for taking a a photo out of the windscreen of a moving car on a phone.
I know that buildings on the left hand side of wallasey village road were knocked down to enable the road to be widened, and there know stands modern(ish) houses.
Great pics Waddi, well done.
I'm not too convinced with the seconds pic though, as Matty said, the spire looks slightly different.

Yeh that's a match, now ive seen the more modern picture
it look like the church in wallasey just before
where the cinema used to be.
I dont know the road.
Well done good catch,
Do you have the colour verision ?
here you go matey
The church is on the corner of Seabank road and Manor road. Picture is taken looking down Seabank road
I dont think thats worked, having trouble uploading it to imageshack and fotopic also
dah dah
not to bad for a beginner to this forum malarky am I...
Picture 66
what do you think?
spot on
struggled to tell the difference then I spotted the bus
We think this is here:
If you look closely at the stonework its exact, window style etc. above the door in the 1st pic it says "HOME ACSO MARINERS" and the second is a picture of mariners home on egremont prom.
It is still there minus the steeple/tower but is all boarded up with metal railings restricting access, thus along with this and the overgrown foilage I couldnt get a photo.
It is where the mariners that came back from sea retired too, its replacement is now next door in the form of "mariners Village"
egremont prom.
Where is that ?
You may be right mr sluth ?
mr sluth?
Egremont prom is the part of the prom between seacombe and new brighton.
Where the church I took the photo off in the previous posts on seabank road, just before the old cinema (APOLLO) thats egremont, and the roads to left lead down to the prom.
we noticed this building just after taking the pic of the church, and went for a nosey.
Okay sherlock
Shame i cant offer a prize, well done
I'm sure your right.
Maybe Matty with his super duper camera may be able to get a modern pic.

Amazing waddi
Your the match man, well done there and shame on whelan lol
Will make new topics at the weekend
originally thought this was frankby road, where they usually have rabbits and ducklings for sale. went there today, dont think it is there actually.
SO we studied the pic once again, enlarged and enhanced it and noticed that the building in the back ground had a sign on it saying "The Boat House", bingo Parkgate.
So we went there, pretty sure it is one in the same, the old brick building on the right of the pic is no longer there, its a car showroom and carpark now, but because of trees I couldnt get a good pic, then it started lashing down so I wasnt hanging around anymore because I had the babies with me.
Didnt I already say that
No 81 - what is now the Fox and hound in the Barnston Dip?

Removed them thanks
I new i was getting close to the limit lol
I'll try and tie up some loose ends:
This isn't in Wallasey, its Bebington Road in New Ferry.
This isn't in Birkenhead, its Grange Road in West Kirby, looking towards the train station.
As I suggested a few pages back, but didnt know for sure to be honest, me mum has confirmed this is in Hoylake, it was actually Hoylake Baths! I didnt know they had any.
Me mum seemed to think this was in Birkenhead, the old Co-op obviously, I
think she said it was towards where TK Maxx is now before all the grange shopping centre was built, I think the building iss still standing. Ill ask her again tomorrow.
This is Storeton Quarry. To be honest it is a bit deep to be the mersey tunnel embankment as we thought.
This is deffo the old Seacombe Ferry terminal before it was rebuilt.
This is apparently Spital Dam, although me mum said there is a dam out towards chester way that is similar to this from what she can remember.
Apparently this is a place called Almere Ferry towards Chester way from what I believe??
This is Raby Mere in the 1930's.
This is Bebington Mill in the 50's, not sure if its still there, possibly demolished?
This is a place called Magazine Shore with some two ship wrecks apparently. I think its towards Eastham way.
This isn't where we had agreed on, if you take a look at the photo merge its quite different. This is actually the Dock Cottages in Birkenhead Docks presumably.
This is Little Neston
This is Pensby Road, in Pensby surprisingly lol.
This is Bromborough Cross
This is deffo the Ring O Bells in West Kirby.
I think this is Town Lane in Bebington, where the road splits for a short while before it merges again.
This is Cammell Lairds in the background so judge from that.
This is the Penny Bridge tollgate in Birkenhead
This is indeed a police station, its apparently in Slatey Road in Birkenhead, up by the museum.
This is slatey road again, looking towards Balls Road I think.
This is by Duke Street in Birkenhead.
This is Village Road, in Oxton.
This is of course Woodside Ferry Terminal. The interesting thing is you can see woodside train station to the left behind it.
This is along Old Chester Road in Birkenhead.
Any more that we havent got yet??
the little neston one is near enough next to the Royal Oak pub, there is a roundabout where the bus is.
WOW Matty you have been busy lol...
Top work by your mum, and places ive never heard of and on the Wirral too?
Well done sherlock
I will add them to the list as soon as i get time
Yeah took about 2 hours to go through and find the ones that hadnt been found, its a mixture of sources, me mum started it off, then she gave me some books on old Wirral etc, and the internet, and ive found out most of the ones we hadnt agreed upon i think.
good work mate

Got to say 76 looks like Storeton.
And i wonder if 80 is Arrow Brook?
Storeton and Arrowe Brook where both my first instinct.
There looks to be a big building in the distance on 76.
Also; Telegraph pole along the Arrowe Brook...i think not.
56 - Bromborough Cross
sorry about the size of the pic, my laptop has gone kaput with a broken DC jack, and the laptop that Im currently using has no image manipulation software.

80 to me looks like where the cycle path from bromborough to port sunlight is... the part parrallel to spital damn area..lookin towards port sunlight...although, the chances of that path being there back that long ago i cant quite see it lol... just looks very similar
According to 20th Century Images posted by Jonno before, 76 is Storeton Woods and 80 is Greasby.
I remember 46 and 50 from childhood...
They are both images of the quarries at the end of Mill Road in Higher Bebington - I remember the mill being demolished - and that dinosaur footprints found in the rock beds there were to be found in mill Road School and in the porch of Christ Church, Higher Bebington
C
Hi, Alsbury; welcome. You're quite right about 46 & 50, they are both of Storeton quarry; the one to the East of Mount Rd. This one was filled with the spoil from the Wallasey tunnel. Matt has picked up one one of the pics, but not the other & on the first page they're still listed as the Mersey tunnel entrance. Perhaps you could correct that, Mark, as I don't have editing privileges for this forum.
Alsbury; yes, I remember the mill too. Storeton Woods used to be one of my main play areas in the 40's & 50's & I now belong to the Friends of Storeton Woods. I hope you find much to interest you on these pages & that you will be able to contribute.
Cheers, Chris.
Why is this prime building land, on Mount Rd. Higher Bebington, near Bracken Lane, still empty? Take a look at pic.50 on page 3. Mine is taken from just about the same spot. I guess no-one wanted to risk building on the spoil from the Kingsway tunnel.
old thread i know, but 53 is liscard but it is near iceland, boots etc looking towards seaveiw road. You can make out the buildings in the background one of them is a salon or something like that (not that i visit you understand) 108 is looking directly down sidney road in tranmere, on the right you can make out one of the 4 high rise smack addict accomodation flats under construction.
pic 102, any clue?
pic 103, duffy likes this place apparently
Five bars Seacombe bottom of Borough road?

Tiny photograph and I have tried to blow it up but just distorts. At a guess Rock Ferry looking at the ferry terminal and that pub whatever it is called?
does any1 have any pics of conway st flyover? I have scored the web and can't find any plzzzzz help.....
Not really OF the flyover, this is looking along the parapet of the flyover on 13 July 1969, the day before it opened to traffic.
wow mad, it didnt really last long before they removed it by the looks of it .
wow mad, it didnt really last long before they removed it by the looks of it .
Yeah it went in the mid-90's didnt it?
That is the best photo I have seen so far of it!
Picture 76 is looking down Red Hill Road on Storeton hill - went there last night to check, wall on left of road and hedges both side and even telegraph poles are still there - along with the long S shape.
Here are two aerial picture of the tunnel approach system including the Conway St flyover. There is a PDF somewhere on wikiwirral of the scheme (which is where I got 1st picture).
If you can't find it then PM me - or someone PM me to tell me how to put a pdf up (I am not very forum savvy - sorry).

Look for (our) soundlad on youtube - he has put up loads of brilliant stuff - thanks Lee.
One of my favourites is "Birkenhead - The 1960's & 70's" which unusually wasn't soundlad - this has Grange Road, Oak & Eldon and even the Coop Dairy on Swan Hill.
Got to agree with dd, Lee(SoundLad) has done a brilliant job with those old videos.
Well done Lee.
nice one Andy

Whos pathetic idea was it to make liscard a one way?
11.
Most of these have been knocked down now and more surrounding building are to be knocked down in february.
I will obtain the photographic evidence of this when it happens
17.
This one must of been taken from the flour mills?
the worst thing that ever happened, get's so congested!
Are there train tracks on pic 11? Was there a railway operating in this area?
Did it link up to the trainline that exists today?
Image number 80 - I've already got this as a photo labelled "Greasby 1930s Wood Lane" and the title seems correct.
The boy is standing at the parapet/handrail of a footbridge crossing Arrowe Brook.
On the 2009 view, the tarmac footpath is a little to the left of the original dirt track.
The path leads from Wood Lane Greasby to Girtrell Road Saughall Massie. Grid ref is SJ258882. The bridge is still a footbridge.
The aerial image shows an arrow for the direction of the photo and a circle where the boy is standing.
76 - maybe upton village looking towards greasby..
I think someone has already got this one but I have a shot of number 41 took from the same place a couple of weeks ago. West Kirby centre.
Unfortunately the road was busy and the bus was sat there in the middle of the shot going nowhere.
is picture 41 the tower pub in liscard wallasey,at the top of mill lane?looks very like it to me.but surrounding area ,i dont recognise, but i dont know how old the pub is,it,s where i met my hubby gary in 1977
41 exactly what it says on the tin " The Tower Pub " Liscard village, on the corner opposite where Mersey Music used to be (Pub's still there but buildings on the left are now car park and tower block.
67 = Boathouse pub Parkgate from the road that leads from the main road at Gayton big sandstone building has gone this is now the corner of a car sales area (used to be Hardings Autos)
68 = Heading down Hoylake rd in Moreton towards the cross (Sandbrook lane goes off to the left just before the church and Knutsford rd is on the right
69 = Central Park Liscard
79 = Raby Mere
37 Please note this is still a cloths shop (Burtons became Top Shop and I think it's still owned by whoever owns Burtons now) If you go in the shop you can still see the stairs on the right (but entrance is closed off now) this lead to the upper floor and fitting rooms.
Sorry No 67 is the Boat House in Parkgate taken from the Gayton Rd just b4 it does a sharp left onto the front.
Are there train tracks on pic 11? Was there a railway operating in this area?
Tracks in the foreground were MD&HB lines which encircled the west float and east float.
These particular lines ran to Duke St in the West and round to the 4 bridges - also similar lines around the East float, which turned left to go over the Poulton/Penny Bridge. They also made a connection to the lines next to Bidston Dock which made a freight only connection to the New Brighton line vary close to Bidston Station.
There were similar double MD&HB lines on the Birkenhead side - running down Beaufort Road/Corporation Road and meeting the national railway lines at Canning Street/Bridge Street
21 - Lees Tapastry Works showing the Dock cottages.. The Tapastry work site is know Kwik Save (Somerfields) also in the Picture birkenhead north railway Station 1948
Were'nt the Dock Cottages (visible in the bottom right of this photo) demolished in the 1930's ? Certain Ilchester Square tenements were built before 1948......

Those pics absolutely brilliant, remember some of the scenes but unfortunately they'd all been recognised long before I got to them. Modern pics don't seem to have the same character to them.

Hi Mark. I think no.35 "The Brown Cow" is in Bromborough Road. Lower Bebington.
N0.26 is Bebington Road, taken just after the T-Junction of "Town Lane". The "Oval" in the distance is on the right.
N0.31 "Bidston Village"
N0.25 The "Dock Cottages" was situated in the North end of Birkenhead.
N0.33 looks like "New Chester Road" (not certain for sure)
N0.30 has me puzzelled looks very upmarket, dont you think?
If I've got any wrong please feel free to correct me. Cheers Wizzo.

Hello, picture 1 is looking down Rodney Street from the top of Whetstone Lane, you can't drive down from Whetstone Lane anymore, there are bollards at the top. picture 18 is Rose Mount, Oxton Village

Picture 59 - It's Mostyn House school, The Parade, Parkgate. The house on the far right side was called Greenshutters. I used to live there! The dormer window sticking out of the roof - that was my bedroom. Lovely house and a happy time.
