Hi thank you for letting me join,
my name is Cliff jones from Wakefield and am hoping to find some history on my family from Birkenhead, it was a big family of 12 children the head of the house was Peter jones and wife was Dorothy Henrietta Jones nee Hobbs, have joined ancestory but nothing showing much on living in Birkenhead, they lived on Beaufort Street
in the 1940s and my dad was buried under rubble for 2 days owing to the bombings before they got him out, hoping someone can help me with searching the family thanks
Hello Cliff, welcome to wiki wirral good luck with your search, we are a friendly bunch on here and i am sure members will help if they can.
i am new members moderator if you need to know anything just ask me.
Hi, Cliff,

The dates you are looking at are not good for research, too recent for there to be much on Ancestry or online, hopefully descendants of the family will see this and get in touch and help.

You probably will know this information, the 12 children were registered in Birkenhead between 1927 and 1939, yourself I think being the last.

Peter and Dorothy were married 1925, Our Lady St Nicholas St Anne, Liverpool.

Beaufort St is Liverpool, Birkenhead has Beaufort Rd and had, Beaufort Square, now demolished.

Beaufort Square more likely I think.
Beaufort Sq does not show in the 1938 directory, not sure the exact date of it being built.
Hi Thank you for your reply,
It was my dad that was born in 1939 and yes he was the last one, I am Clifford his son, because he moved to Wakefield in the 60s following my mum who was also from Birkenhead Joan Elsie jones nee Gibbens, There was not much contact with the Family, I have just spoken to him he says the road that he lived on was opposite the docks so I presume it is Beaufort Rd number 155,i am hoping to get my dad pictures and some history for him, once again Thank you
I can't find anything on 155 Beaufort Rd, directories up to 1938, not suggesting it didn't exist, may have been built after the 1938, which would have been compiled in 1937.

Beaufort Square doesn't show in the 1938 directory, however,
Leslie Jones, son of Mr&Mrs Henry F Jones was killed at 32 Beaufort Sq, 21 December, 1940 in the bombing raids. Not suggesting he was related.

Perhaps 155 Beaufort Rd was built about the same time as Beaufort Square, between 1938 and 1940.

Was 155 the house your father was pulled out of the rubble?

Hi Cliff,
just noticed your post. The "Britain from Above" website shows a good view of the entire length of Beaufort Road in 1946.(You need to register free to use the enlarge tools).
If you type Gilbrook basin into the search area a couple of photo's will come up.
Both also show Beaufort Square, as mentioned by Bert. One of the photo's shows clearly an end flat which appears to have been renovated with different roofing and brickwork. Possibly this was damaged in the war, as Laird Street Bus Depot, immediately behind Beaufort Square was hit and could be, again, the incident Bert refers to where there were fatalities.
Hope you have success in your search for family history.
Hi Bert
yes it was 155 once it was bombed they moved out and it was rebuilt so they could move back in,
many thanks Cliff
Hi Cliff,
looking a little closer on the Britain from Above photo of Beaufort Road, there appears to be re-built houses amongst the terraces, perhaps 155 was among these?
Hi Kyl
Thank you for the link I have signed up and can see what you can see, I will show them to my dad when I see him, once again many thanks Cliff

Hi Nightwalker I have just paid for userplus but cant see the image yet? will try later Thanks Cliff
Not a lot to see, Cliff - confirmation that the family lived at 155 Beaufort Road. Shows details for Peter and Dorothy but the children's records are not available under the 100 year rule.
Many Thanks Nightwalker
at least it confirms the right address smile

In the second line down on this page, go to "my stuff" then "edit profile" in the left column, then tick "user plus". That should give you access.
Hi Chris

Taken from Family Search. It might be right or wrong. I can't copy whole pages for you for some reason. You can have a look and see if yu can find anymore possible children. It is confusing about the two Peter's. One Hobbs the other Jones but you may be able to figure that one out. If you can find her family on 1911 census, it may also help by giving clues.

Cliff has Ancestry, which he mentioned in his first post.

I'm sorry I can't help with finding the family members, but as an aside part would be interested where 155 was.
I'm hoping someone may have the address of The Graving Dock Hotel(possibly from an old telephone book) which could help pinpoint where the house was.
I think 155 might have been where I've marked on these maps and blown up pic from Britain From Above

Derek,

Here is the 1938 directory for Beaufort Rd, you can see what properties were there then.

Thanks Bert but looking for a house number for the pub
eg (141?) Beaufort Rd

There appears to be 2 Graving Docks pubs at one time (one of which was The Blood Tub)

Nightwalker with the 1939 register might be able to count along from 155 to the Graving Dock Hotel and give an indication where it was.

Hi Thank you all so much for all this information,
I feel so far away in Wakefield but my heart still belongs to Birkenhead, many a story my Grandfather Gibbens told me when i was young about the dock where he used to work, once again many thanks it is appreciated! what a great site this is!
kind regards Cliff

Assuming Dorothy Henrietta Hobbs and Peter Jones marriage records of 1925 are correct, these children all born Wirral/Birkenhead between 1925 and 1939 all had surname Jones and a mother maiden name as Hobbs. Maybe not all are the same family but it does give you an idea that can be followed up by birth certs, marriage records etc.if you wish.

Then of course there is the question of Peter Hobbs born Toxteth 1921 Mother Dorothy Hobbs, and Peter Jones born Toxteth 1921 Mother Dorothy Hobbs, followed in 1925 by a Marriage of Dorothy Hobbs to Peter Jones ??

This larger scale 1950s OS map shows the numbering at the west end of Beaufort Road, with number 155 outlined. The aerial photo below, taken in July 1946, clearly shows the rebuilt war-damaged properties at numbers 137-139 and 155-159.
