Was walking around St Barnabas graveyard, Bromborough, today and I noticed ath least three gravestones had a symbol best described as either a dollar sign with three lines or an upper-case S with three vertical bars through it. Anyone shed any light?

Just guessing but this symbol, which looks like a dollar sign ($), is actually the letters I, H, and S superimposed over each other. These represent the Greek letters Iota (Ι), Eta (Η) and Sigma (Σ), which are the first three letters of Jesus in Greek.
