Does anyone know where this picture is taken? I am stumped. The sender thinks its New Brighton but I am not 100% sure on that as I don't recognise the "folly" castle turrent in the background. I thought Leasowe Castle grounds...
what does it say down the lefthand side?
(tips screen over)
"Victoria Road, New Brighton"
Again though, I don't recognise that "building" in the background c1920. The riders by the way are the Kinghams who owned a number of shops and businesses in New Brighton.
just across the lights on vitoria rd is the old church on the left, prior to that there is an old building , could it be to do with that ?

The St Peter & Paul (top of Hope Street)?
no i was thinking of the church on the way to the train station
on the junction of fowell rd and victoria rd
I would say definitely not Leasowe Castle. Their turret is a different shape and not square. Not Victoria road to my knowledge anyway where was there open space to ride horses like that in Victoria road? Perhaps that is just the address of The Kinghams?
The Kinghams did own shops and clubs (Empress Ballroom) in Victoria Road. I agree that there is no common land/fields in Victoria Road or even the surrounding by this time as it was all built up. I actually think the picture is maybe further afield ie on the west side of the Wirral.
This looks like what is now St.Andrews church on Rowson St.

Going through all the churches to disclaim them!

It's not the old tower at St Hilary's then?

Its similar but there are slight differences with the window. Even 19th Century pictures have the windows blocked up.
Looks similar to the tower on st Mary and st Helens church in Neston
