Does anyone remember the old Fever Hospital which was somewhere near the old New Ferry Baths (at the bottom of Shorefields I think ? )The patients were brought in by boat from the Liverpool ships. I think they were mainly Lascars ? with suspected smallpox etc.
The Drs & nurses used to ride on horses (in white uniforms !)up the Mayfields? towards the toll bar in New Ferry. As children, when we saw them,we would chant " Touch collar, never swallow fever "....
I am almost sure, that a couple of people from New Ferry, contracted Smallpox from an infected patient...late 1940's ?
Can anyone confirm ?

That brought back some memories, we used to say as kids "touch your collar, never swallow, never get the fever" don't know where the saying came from but it brought back some memories.
