I posted this in the Pubs thread but then saw this and thought this would be a better place. I have been told about a pub that was in an area known locally at the time as the Gourri (don't know how to spell it) Piazza. Does that mean anything to anyone please? I think this would have been in the late 19th century. Thanks.

Piazza is a open public square surrounded by buildings, so that might point towards Hamilton Sq.

The Gourri piazza was as set of warehouses over in Liverpool in the 1800s just behind the Liver buildings, when that was a dock.

That's great - thanks so much. I'd googled like mad but not found anything. Apparently one of my ancestors ran/owned a pub there. I've been told it was called Gourri after a place in Senegal as a lot of boats came in from there (maybe slavery ships).

I've just googled 'Senegal slaves liverpool' and found a link to the Merseyside Maritime Museums with a map and information and a picture of the Goree warehouses.

Thanks, davew3. That's much better than anything I've just managed to find on my search. I'm looking forward to telling my dad all this next time I see him as it is him who gave me the details but he didn't know anything more. I'm glad I found this forum.

Hi Bemahan and welcome,

Try these links -

It's Liverpool history so you won't find much about it on this Wirral website. Liverpool history is so massive it would be easy to be swamped.

I have spoken to David Appleyard, the son of the painter of Goree Piazzas & he is going to send me a high resolution photo of the painting which I am going to try & have a print made of.
