Enjoyed the diving, but didn't watch the fencing as I don't understand it at all.

Happy to hear the cyclist is at least conscious, as all sorts of horrible thoughts came flooding in when the delay in an update seemed to take a long time.

Would like to watch the swimming but it's not on until 3am, and that's not acceptable. laugh
Posted By: Excoriator Re: Olympics - 8th Aug 2016 7:13am
The whole thing is a huge bore, and I cannot see why the Beeb has to devote itself to showing it to the total elimination of anything worth watching.

Brazil would have been better doing something to improve the lot of its millions of favella dwellers than mounting this ridiculously extravagant show.

It is high time that the whole Olympic thing were cut down to size. Perhaps a limit set to the cost of mounting it so that poorer countries can host it without wrecking their economies. Even in the UK is sucked funding from sports venues up and down the country, and the net result of this is fewer people taking part in sport, not more as we were told would be the case.

I am suspicious of the timing of the Russian ban too, and sceptical of the implication that it is only them who are guilty. I bet every country is at it. The pressure to win medals is too strong to resist.
Posted By: mikeeb Re: Olympics - 8th Aug 2016 7:35pm
It is not a bore excoriator
It is brilliant and brings the whole world together. Absolutely brilliant laugh

Have to agree with you on the Russian subject though
Posted By: RUDEBOX Re: Olympics - 8th Aug 2016 8:13pm
Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten says she is "fine" in hospital after a serious crash while leading the women's road race in Rio on Sunday.

The 33-year-old had pulled clear with 10km to go, but came off her bike on a sharp turn while travelling at speed down the Vista Chinesa descent.

She lay motionless while help arrived.

Van Vleuten was taken into intensive care after suffering severe concussion and three small fractures in her lower back.

She later tweeted to say she was "super disappointed after best race of my career".

Van Vleuten sent a further tweet on Monday, which read: "Waiting for some research and hope I can leave today. Knowing that this chance is one in four years doesn't make it easy."

I remain unconvinced as to it's bringing the world together. I think it encourages tribalism, and the way the media treat it is frankly jingoist. "Another gold for Team GB!" and similar phrases makes me cringe.

It is not even a healthy thing to aim at. You have to ne a monomaniac and devote your life to it to the exclusion of all else, and push your body to breaking point and beyond. Hardly mens sana in corpore sano is it!

I have nothing against sporting competition, but when it becomes a media spectacle involving billions, with massive bribes and various inducements involved, and the massive spending of what should be spent on social improvement in countries like Brazil it ceases to be sport and becomes a ridiculous and dangerous charade.

Enjoy it if you think this is all worth while. It isn't for me, and we'll just have to agree to differ on the matter.

Can't agree with your viewpoint Ex. but we are all different.
Enjoyed the diving last night and now watching the rowing.
I think we should be so proud of our boys and girls, for their dedication and determination, medals or no medals. They deserve every bit of praise.
How boring it would be if we were all the same without drive to succeed.

Competition is a natural thing in humans and animals, survival of the fittest
Lets have a healthy competition, that is what sport is
The world is brought together through sport and the majority like at least one sporting discipline, or more

Quite enjoyed the rugby sevens.. only 7 minutes a half. fast and furious tactical and skilful and not too boring and drawn out like some of the sports.
Watched the brit in the trap shooting ---was expecting a rabbit to be running along the back wall. Couldn't see what the heck he was shooting at.

Cricket commentators were taking the mick about the easiest gold medal to get.. the cox in the rowing.

synchronised diving doh whatever next. How and why did that ever become an Olympic sport. If they both do exactly the identical poor dive with the same mistakes do they get extra points? What else can we synchronise---pole vault would be interesting. Pretty much the same as diving.

They are the best. World record too.

Can anyone tell why they have 4 cyclists and one always drops to the back and eventually one drops out ? Still haven't caught onto why they do that.

The grandchildren have been somewhat banished to the garden today. Feeling guilty now. (no I'm not). Thoroughly enjoyed all of the races today.. The tennis seems tame after these high powered sports.

They take turns at the front, where it's hardest because of air resistance, while the others "shelter" in the leader's slipstream. When the leader is tired, he/she drops to the back for a rest. Eventually one who is in the lead rides him/herself to exhaustion, increasing the group speed, then drops out. The time is taken from when the third rider crosses the line, and it wouldn't actually help to have another rider at the end.
Posted By: granny Re: Olympics - 13th Aug 2016 10:48pm
Thanks Chris. I thought the final three could be due to being little point in four of them getting in each others way, but did not at all understand the reason for dropping back.

Didn't they do well ?

JASON KENNY. Wow ..... nail biting stuff.

Congratulations Jason and to team GB an absolutely fantastic night on the track.. clap clap clap

Didn't know this. No wonder the yanks are so rich so young.

Interesting....

According to TIME, Michael Phelps could leave Rio owing up to $55,000 in income taxes.

That's because the U.S. Olympic Committee awards prize money to Olympic athletes who medal at the Games – $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze.

These awards, like other prize money (from a lottery jackpot to a Nobel Prize to game show winnings) is taxable income in the eyes of the IRS.

This so-called "victory tax" varies depending on each athlete's tax bracket. Top earners like Phelps (who is estimated to have a net worth between $50 and $55 million, according to CNBC), will owe $9,900 on each gold medal, while athletes without the star swimmer's lucrative endorsement deals will end up owing far less

Lower-earning athletes can also reduce the amount they owe in taxes by deducting training and traveling expenses. The athletes' medals themselves are also taxed, but given that the metal used in a gold medal is worth $564, these taxes are negligible, according to CNN.

Quite a keen sportsman--just depends on the sport and the attached hype. I see BBC anoraks have tried to predict that we will end up with more medals than China---big deal. I can go into my local Chinese take away and brag "we got more medals than you na na "

Granny you mentioned about the pitch being water logged, I think that it is meant to have water on it.
I don't know for sure but astro turf was horrible to play on when is full of sand. I have had some nasty burns off it in the past

They did dice with death a bit, but GOLD is GOLD and it was well deserved .

Tom Daley, I missed that but he got the highest score so fingers crossed

How life can change so much, at the bat of an eyelid.

Senor Olympic Official ,Pat Hickey is now in maximum security prison. Bail refused and it could be that he won't be going anywhere for at least 12 weeks, when the inquiry could be completed.

A pretty grim experience for anyone in a Brazilian prison.

Not quite true-- having played rugby for Old Instonians, football, done a marathon, competed in town games for BI at shot put and always 2nd in 100ms at school. Think I may have medalled in the egg and spoon race.

Any more evidence for relay disqualification...all the runners seem to changing batten over in the same manner.
Posted By: granny Re: Olympics - 20th Aug 2016 12:29pm
There still doesn't seem to be an update on the relay. Pretty cruel call.

On a brighter note, Heath won GOLD in kayaking. Didn't see it though. frown

Are you on a water meter? Will cost a bit to fill the bath every day so you can practice by ducking under and holding your nose. After watching the Russian synchronised girls Weightlifting looks easier.

I see they have given a reason and evidence for the GB mens relay disqualification--what a load of rubbish. Seems to me the Brazil nut ref got it wrong and they have been looking for some reason to uphold their decision.
I don't know how the red line runs across the track but if its parallel to the white line that all the runners right foot is next to then I cant see how the GB guy is at fault any more than the others. if a judge is just looking at the feet how does he know who the foot belongs to could easily get it wrong. ROBBED.
