Hi all
We are getting an 8 month old female Akita tonight and need some advice on food, vets, insurance etc.
The previous owners cannot keep the dog any more for whatever reasons and we have decided to become dog owners again but have never dealt with anything like an Akita as we have always had mongrels in the past.

We have a crate for her to sleep in as she is already in one where she is now and have bought a harness type leash.
Is there anything I should be watchful about?

And one last thing, she has a rather whiffy dog smell so I need her to go and get a doggy clean somewhere, any recommendations?
Many thanks

Steve

They are very dominant dogs and she will therefore need a lot of socialising.Be very careful around other dogs until you know her temperament, although she is only 8 months old she will still be a big girl.Good luck.

we us the mobile dog wash and they are great with our very boisterious husky...she comes out soft and fluffy and they have a range of perfumes. you dont even have to leave the house , they come to you.

Like he says .. The vet told me to introduce mine to as many dogs people kids while he was growing up .. clever dogs and because of there sensitive nature well behaved, mine never puts a foot wrong,Typical Hunting dogs so can be difficult to get there attention when out doors so I keep mine on his lead most of the time as I could do without the hassle` Have also been told they get bored easily indoors although mine never gets chance,
post a picture up in the pets section when you get her if you get a chance ..good luck

hi insanekitty im on my 2nd akita she's a rescue they are good dogs but you need to make sure it knows its place in the pack.they can start to become dominant if you let them around 18mths to 2 yrs so training is essential from the moment it enters your home & it needs to be reinforced.they can be great family dogs but the one ive got now is all for me im her favourite family member.wildspirit on here is a breeder but there is a group on fb akita world & ive found that site to be helpful.hope your puppy settles in well.one more thing they blow their coats twice a year for about 8-10 weeks so be prepared for lots of hoovering

I use Champion Dogs at Arrow Park, they are a cracking company and really good with the dogs and owners smile
They have grooming saloon and do training/socialisation lessons.

Good luck with Mira I wouldn't have any other breed of dog now.The 2 Ive had both different personalities, amber was laid back calm but misty is a bouncy energetic type which keeps me fit.

No advice on Akitas, however I also take my dogs to Champion Dogs at Arrowe Park. We have done puppy nursery (bit like palygroup for puppies upto 18 weeks great fun), puppy training and had some grooming done there. Sarah, Graham and the gang are very helpful smile
