my dog has got drops of blood coming from his willy...that can't be good :•0

I noticed last week, drops of blood on the kitchen floor & living room floor but couldn't figure out where they were coming from...then the dog came in tonight, more drops of blood on the floor, checked him over & dabbed his willy with a tissue and it's red, fresh blood...obviously going to take him the vets tomorrow but wanted to know if anyone else had experienced this and what the outcome was. The dog is absolutely fine in himself, eating, drinking and being his usual pain in the arse self.
When a dog is spotting blood from his penis, there is generally a standard set of diagnostic tests that are performed. First, we perform a urinalysis and urine culture, which helps to tell if there is a urinary tract infection. If there is no infection, then we usually take an X-ray to help evaluate the prostate and also to look for bladder stones. If the X-ray is normal, we do an ultrasound to further assess the kidneys, bladder and prostate gland for signs of cysts or tumors. Occasionally if we still do not find anything abnormal, we check the dog’s blood pressure and blood clotting ability to look for more uncommon causes of urinary tract bleeding. However, I would guess that the most likely source of the bleeding is your dog’s prostate gland. This gland, which sits just behind the bladder in male dogs, is a common source for urinary tract bleeding in unneutered male dogs. As the dog ages, the prostate gland enlarges and can develop cysts or even tumors that can bleed. Usually, neutering the dog is the solution to the problem. By neutering the dog you remove the source of testosterone, which will then allow the prostate gland to shrink. This will usually stop bleeding coming from the prostate gland.
He needs to go the vet and i would Neuter him too.
Good luck

My post is not quite so professional as that of Kevinx :-)
My own experience was our male Alsation was in pursuit of a female in heat and leapt over a high fence basically while he had a hard on{pmsl sorry] and he cut his willy so when it retracted it bled inside and only dripped occasionaly but he did need a visit to the vets.

I'm wincing!! Poor soul!!
My dog had a similar problem last year, only it wasn't dripping blood, it was a stream. Anyway, to cut a long story short it turned out to be an ossified tumour in the bladder. I'm glad we had insurance as the op cost a few hundred quid with no guarantee of success. Anyway, the vet did a great job and a year on my friend is right as rain.
Sorry to hear this Cathie, keep us all updated on how he gets on at the vets.
hope hes ok?
GROSS!

Hope it turns out to be something minor for pup. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Thanks everyone, looks like it is his prostate, he's had an injection to chemically castrate him, some painkillers and antibiotics and I've got to collect a urine sample...should be fun.

if he's ok in 4 weeks castration is the way forward if not then it'll be scans etc either way I better get saving :0)
After castration and numerous visits to the vets Casy has now been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer :'•( give him painkillers and anti inflammiterys and see how he goes
