today would of been my beautiful japanese akita amber,s 13th birthday. she had to be put to sleep last july. she couldnt put weight on her back legs and the hot weather didnt help. she wasnt one for the hot weather. i dont half miss her. we had her cremated, now she sits on ashelf on the welsh dresser in the back room.

I know exactly how you feel.Sitting on the shelf, on the sideboard behind me are the ashes of my last 3 dogs, Patch---Toby---Smokey, who had been my pals going back 40 years. I am as mad as hell at the 3 of them. They refused to go quietly in their sleep. OH No!! Not them. They put me through the misery of having to give the vet "The Nod", as they lay in my arms. So here I am.Feeling guilty for letting someone kill my best mates. I am 75 now and cannot bring myself to take on another dog, in case I pop my clogs and it gets to feeling like I do as I remember what are now, my 3 little caskets of ash, behind me.You have my sympathy at your loss. I do not know your age, but if you are young enough to give a dog 12 to 15 years of your life, do not heitate. GET ANOTHER.

maybe we will get another dog in the future, its the thought of loosing another dog. she was our third but she was the one we had longest. we went to see her at three days old and every two weeks after that till we brought her home. she was the runt of the litter but she did good. we used to show her and she won best puppy in breed. its still to soon to replace her because i still miss her.

I still miss our cat- passed away a year ago. Buried him under a tree planted, in back garden, in his memory. Its starting to bud now that makes me v. Happy.

I agree with flycaster. go and get another dog. Not to replace your sad lose, that cannot be done. Another dog will give you lots of pleasure in different ways than your last one. I know because I went and got a rescue dog straight way after i had to have my labrador put to sleep, that was 15 months ago. I still miss my lab and probable always will. But that does not take away the pleasure and enjoyment i get from my rescue dog.

ive still got my cat although hes fifteen now. two years ago he had to have his thyroid removed because it was overactive.it was cheaper to have the op because he could have been on tablets forever. he was brilliant after the op and he still acts like a kitten. i think he missed amber when she went but he gets more attention now.as my dog walking friend said pedigrree dogs dont seem to have a long life span anything after ten is a bonus.

I waited four years before getting another dog after my Gt dane died. I planted a cameilia in my dogs memory and the thing never flowered until I got another dog 3 years ago. Its like she wanted me to have another dog! You will get another if and when you are ready.

i have thought about getting another dog cos it was bad at first comming back from the school run and she wasnt there waiting to go to the park, but i dont want to rush into getting another dog to soon. if icould get another akita i would, but ive got three young children at home and three grandchildren who come to visit so its the case of getting a dog with the right temprament. it would also have to get on with my elderly cat.

Fully agree. So many dogs out there just wanting a loving home with an owner who cares about their welfare.

Our Yorkshire terrorist "Timmy" drags me round Harrison Park or New Brighton beach most days. After that he insists that we visit The Telegraph, even though he doesn't drink. Strange that!
