I went to the beach this morning to walk the dog, when we got there the beach was covered in 'shite' and couldn't believe what I was seeing. The bins were over flowing, barbeques were left there, beer cans, glass bottles etc. Its like the public just don't care and leave it there, not that the bins are adequet enough for the size of the beach anyway. The beach has an adopt-a-beach scheme where a team is sponsered to clean it in aid of marine conservation! Where the hell are they? Also the council dont seem to be doing there job properly as I'm sure the bins should be emptied at night not left overflowing for the tide to wash out to sea which was the case! Really Pisses me off. here are some pics.

All the smashed glass collected

What pisses me off the most is the council do clean it up but use a 'beach rake' whic basically scoops up the rubbish but also in the process smashes any glass bottles!

Anyway if any one is walking along the coastline and you see litter could you pick it up and stick it in a bin. Marine litter can blow around, remain floating on the water surface, drift in the water column, get entangled on shallow, tidal bottoms or sink to the deeper seabed. It can also get caught up around a boat propeller or diving kit that can be a right pain! What about windsurfers and kiutesurfers who use the beach, not to mention kids who run around barefoot with glass lying unseen below the sand.

I have emailed the council, sas, morrisons and adoptabeach so hopefully an awarness to the public can be put in place. Sorry for the rant but I though i should post it as I am posting it on other forums too.

Cheers mIKe

Is 50/50, the council must provide a better rubbish disposal system, and the public needs to be more responsible and make the effort to use thesse bins etc.

either way, it is shockin to see thses pic's frown

Ok, the bins overflowing - at least people have made an effort, and maybe bigger bins should be supplied.

But this picture...

..theres no excuse for it!! What happened to drinking in public places? Maybe a similar scheme like Birkenhead (And surrounding 'burbs) should be employed on the beach, where drinking is prohibited or there is a fine.

...Id wager most of that mess has been beer fueled.... frown

All those beers bottles and the like....I can guarantee theyll most likely be Teens and people in early 20s..

Ive hung round on Wirrals beaches..having Fires and Barbeques etc etc...weve never just littered though

I dont really agree with placing a drinking ban or fining people drinking on beaches....itll be tough...and probably take a long time...but all the anti-littering campaigns have all but disappeared over the years...re-instate them...itll bring littering back into the public eye..hopefully itll pick up (No Pun Intended)

Total disgrace, should be made a prosecutable offence (100 hours minimum community service, with repeated offenders getting a custodial sentence) and more undercover police keeping an eye on these ...!!

What a mess frown

there is a drinking ban in 'force' on the beach! obviously not enforced! i collected all that glass.

anyway emailed the council, still no reply, emailed surfers against sewage - there on the case!

hopefully going to have a campaign day on the beach, marine conservation awareness and no butts campaign (no fag ends on beach)

council need to put bigger bins in too and more of them, the beach gets rammed on a hot day.

Once upon a while ago I was in Chile at a resort called Vina.

There is not a lot of tide rise/ fall there so the beach is available most of the time and it is well used because Vina is a posh resort. However, early every morning before the crowds come and every evening after they have gone you see gangs of guys "raking" the beach by dragging a length of 4x4 timber that has a metal comb attached. The idea was to have the beach clean, neat and tidy for the visitors. They drag up all the litter - and yes they can keep anything of value that they find eg the occasional watch or coins. The point is these guys (in lines of 15 or so guys) were chained to their rakes and there were all overseen by the police. In effect they were doing their community service in compensation for what I was told were minor or modest infringements such as getting drunk, fighting, some traffic offences or generally being a scally.

In the same theme, during the night you would hear noises in the streets - and it was the same offenders still doing their commumity service by now sweeping up all the sadd that blows (every day) off the beaches onto the town roads (to a depth of several inches).

When I asked I was told that this "evening + night duty" type of community service was good because the offenders could still do their regular jobs during the day. It does seem better than a custodial sentence which would probably also result in loss of job.
