i dont want to seem unkind to their unfortunate news but last time i went down NB there wasnt much funfair left to burn!

Wirralnews.co.uk seems goosed as I type this but did you see the recent story of the owner fearing for it's future and how he may have to speak to developers who approached him regarding apartment development?

This may be a blessing in disguise for him, I just hope he didn't lose too much in the blaze.
Posted By: _Ste_ Re: wilkies funfair new brighton - 19th Oct 2011 7:33am
That is not good news, hope all is alright there.
I'm thinking maybe a fryer left on?

If it is used for development what happens to the tunnels?
Posted By: AlexB Re: wilkies funfair new brighton - 19th Oct 2011 7:34am
I really don't know what would happen to them. I doubt they'd be filled but then again if the place is demolished they could be lost into history forever.

I'll see what I can uncover during the course of the day.

Back it up or shut up and give the rumour mill a rest.

I strongly suggest that if it had have been then a decent job would have been done.

its been updated on the bbc, its now saying

Quote

A fire service spokesman said the blaze started in a ground-floor storeroom and damaged three other rooms and a club on the second floor.

No-one was in the two-storey building at the time.

Sounds like it was in the front of the building.

No, it's not.

Of course it is. It's a tip that hasn't been updated in years, the best thing would of been for it to burn down so it could be built back to a half decent standard, now it will probably just have another lick of paint and be just as bad as ever.
Posted By: AlexB Re: wilkies funfair new brighton - 19th Oct 2011 5:02pm
Of course it is?

Do older buildings not catch fire?

On the contrary I'd say they were more liable to problems leading to a blaze.

Stop with the defamatory remarks or back them up.

The guy who's family business has just nearly burnt down doesn't deserve anonymous Internet muppets passing on rubbish.

I don't need to back them up it's my opinion of the place. As I said in my first comment it's bad news, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, but the fact is is that's it's dated and needs alot of investment to bring it up to the standard of what new Brighton will want to be in the future.
Posted By: AlexB Re: wilkies funfair new brighton - 19th Oct 2011 5:54pm
I don't disagree in general with your opinion of the place just that they attempted to burn it down themselves...

Wasn't me who said that, I also don't believe that either.
I do actually spend time there because my daughter likes the outdoor rides, but think he may have some hard times ahead if more new attractions open down there, but hey I may be wrong it would be a shame really

If it was his dad that still owned it I would of agreed, as he did that years ago to the bingo hall he had by the Chelsea.. But David is not like that. He even knows how to look ater his workers to a ponit, unlike his dad....

It would be really sad if the Palace ever went, it is the one last remaining buildings on the front with character. It is the signature building of the front. Money should be put into the restoration.

My daughter and I both work right by there, she was in work today and said there was a lot of activity from the fire officers and forensics but no obvious damage to the outside that she could see. I'm in work tomorrow so will hopefully find out more then.

It is very unfair of you to say that it is an eyesore, it's part of New Brighton's Heritage.

Hello Bezzy ,Yes it is part of Newbrighton`s heritage not disputing that .But how is it unfair to say it how it is ,to be honest with you it`s not an eye sore, it`s a dump, and has been for many years . Fantastic building but a dump how ever you dress it up it needs work doing as you would expect from a building of it`s age that`s all i`m saying

Is this going to be another thread taken off topic and ruined today?

Can we stick to the topic?

Remember chaps, your favourite section of the forum, wiki chat, is for the drivel.

Thanks.

Agreed that's it's part of New Brighton, shame some money couldn't be invested into it to bring it back to life & maybe up to date.

my grandparents met at this building, my grandad worked on the waltzers and my nan used to come over from west derby over to the fun fair. to me this building holds special means. i hope that mr wilkie can restore it and this does not mean the end of it. would be such a sad loss for something that has been involved in the history of new brighton for many years.

I spoke to the man himself this afternoon and the fire was started in a store room and spread to the plant room. All the electrics for there and tallulahs were damaged but he hoping to be up and running by the weekend.

I used to love the fair when i was achild, always seemed better when i was younger with the go-karts and all the slides etc
Had many a happy time in there. Yes, the building has seen better days, but it was always awesome and i still enjoy going down there.

miss the go karts and the old rides though. not keen on the larger arcade section

Certainly not a dump then! Great news that it should be up and running again by the weekend.
