Smoking will be banned in all prisons in Wales and four in south-west England from next year, the government says.
This will begin a phased roll-out that will eventually see all jails in England and Wales go smoke-free.
And from next month, smoking will be barred inside buildings at all "open" prisons in England and Wales.
The Prison Governors Association, which supports the ban, said it would monitor this initial phase to ensure stability and safety were maintained.
A smoke-free policy will be implemented in all prisons in Wales - Cardiff, Parc, Swansea and Usk/Prescoed - from January 2016, and at four English prisons - Exeter, Channings Wood, Dartmoor and Erlestoke - from March 2016.
Smoking is currently allowed only in prison cells and exercise yards, but the government eventually intends to ban smoking in all 136 prisons in England and Wales to reduce health risks.

Smoking should be not allowed in prisons .There in prison for punishment for the crime they have committed.

They can't even control illegal drugs in prison (or legal highs apparently), imposing yet another unachievable target is ridiculous.

The increase in black market trading inside is going to increase problems surely?

What if you're on remand ?

How will they enforce it ? With the legal highs problem and everything perhaps they should introduce US style prison visits where they have to speak on phones behind glass. And how come they can't jam mobile phones to prevent their use in prisons ?

Can't imagine it will happen without a rumpus . If it should, there could be an obese prison population, instead.

Whilst we are on the subject of prisons, although slightly different.

Good idea !

UK to build £25m Jamaican prison

The UK is to spend £25m on building a prison in Jamaica so that foreign criminals in the UK can be sent home to serve sentences in the Caribbean.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced the deal as he started a Jamaica visit.

The project has been agreed to break the deadlock in negotiations over a prisoner transfer deal between the two countries.

More than 600 Jamaican nationals are in UK jails but cannot be deported because of Jamaica's poor prison conditions.

Indeed, and even better its out of the foreign aid budget, so we'll see something sensible for our money for a change ,(instead of some of the pointless projects), get rid of a load of troublesome Yardies ,and ease our own prison population at the same time. Sounds good.

Good point keving. Your post made me look up whether unconvicted remand prisoners were kept seperately from convicted inmates , because I would have said they (RP's) should definitely be allowed to smoke.

Was really quite shocked to read this

quote http://www.jigsawvisitorscentre.org.uk/remand-prisoners/

'The regime and entitlements for remand prisoners awaiting trial are different to those of convicted prisoners. Although these prisoners should be held separately from sentenced prisoners often a individual on remand awaiting trial will have to share a cell with a convicted prisoner.'

Dreadful for potentially innocent people to be roomies with convicted ones , especially younger impressionable ones. Its madness!

So, from a smoking point of view, you would still have to have to have smoking areas, to give 'innocent' men their rights in my opinion - but when they go back to their shared cell- reeking of baccy in front of their addicted room mate , thats going to cause trouble !

If they think they have seen riots in our prisons then wait until they try to enforce this, all hell will break out.

I don't suppose the two faced politicians have any plans to ban smoking in the House of Commons bar areas yet?

Just asking.

So you can still smoke at the House of Commons and in the Lords area of the estate? I understand the ban in prisons will be a total ban?
Posted By: Mark Re: Prison smoking ban - 1st Oct 2015 10:10am
it will be eventually, its starting in open prisons first. Probably to do a O shit Report, we got that wrong.
I think by 2016 this time next year it will be all.
