There's been a Coronal Mass Ejection (?) and a bonzoid geo-magnetic storm is heading this way tomorrow. Not a joke/wind-up. Just heard it on the radio. Check out this site for more technical info.....

Bye-bye electronic crap in cars. Electricity supplies. Unhardened communications. On the plus side we might have the Northern Lights to look at - as there won't be anything on the telly !!

(It's being so cheerful that keeps me going!)
Posted By: jabber_Ish Re: Solar Storm heading for Earth - 7th Mar 2012 10:36pm
quality , ive been waiting a few years for a big one to see what would really happen

it could get really interesting if satellites and electronics all pack up ,
Posted By: Geekus Re: Solar Storm heading for Earth - 7th Mar 2012 11:08pm
There was a programme on telly last night all about this. It's on the BBC iplayer if anyone particularly wants to watch it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod...Solar_Storms_The_Threat_to_Planet_Earth/

...you might just have time before the internet crashes!

EVERYTHING'S GOING TO BE OK. I think Gallaghers pub still use the old hand pumps for the Trappers. Mmmmm....Getting there could be a problem ?
Posted By: BandyCoot Re: Solar Storm heading for Earth - 8th Mar 2012 1:21pm
If I remember rightly they also affect normal hf comms as well as the VHF/UHF, so should be fun to see how we cope when everything crashes. Always reckoned the total switch to digital was dodgy because it goes up on the high bands.
I'm ok, I can walk to Gallaghers.
Sod you Jack, I'm inboard.

On the BBC1 news this lunchtime they said "between now and 11pm".

So what do we do, sit and look out of the window for the next 9 hours, or just wait until we hear of someone with a tinfoil hat on, has gone up in smoke?

Back on topic (ahem). Just got up to see if the Northern Lights (offshoot of the solar storm) were switched on. Can't see a thing. Total cloud cover here. Sod's Law eh?

Looks like all the electrickery stuff and electronicrap gismos are still working OK.

Has anyone heard of anything actually being interupted/damaged by the storm ? It seems to have dropped off the news now. The BBC World Service hasn't mentioned it at all during the wee small hours.

Back to the pit........... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

As mentioned in yesterday's post at 6.20pm, my mobile had been flashing almost continuously for the previous two hours. It was still doing so at 6.50pm when I went out, but was put in my bag.
I suppose some might have taken that particular post as banter,as there was a lot of banter at the time, by many peeps, but it wasn't. Don't know if that counts as part of your enquiry Pinz.

I was looking out most the day and night and never saw anything like i said.
It was a lovely thread though Pinz x

Thanks for that link Geekus. Great non-events of our time eh?
Ho-hum. I eat some of the reserve provisions whilst in the bunker. 1/3d on the label of the Baked Beans. Not feeling so good now. Uh oh rambling again! Bye.

1/3d for a tin of baked beans; where do you shop, Harrods or Fortnum & Mason?

Watching the lunchtime news, they showed pictures of the Northern Lights in what looked like normal daylight conditions.

Don't know exactly what time the images on telly were taken but reading up on it, it is apparently possible for the Northern Lights to be seen during the daytime (but it's rare).

Sorry Lightning, I take back my 'wobbly rainbow' remark! raftl
Posted By: BandyCoot Re: Solar Storm heading for Earth - 9th Mar 2012 8:20pm
That pillock Fred said they might show tonight, no sign up to now. At least I have been lucky enough to have seen them, if you do they will fill you with wonderment. No wonder the ancients used to think there were gods up there doing stuff. Maybe we're not far enough north.
Posted By: Geekus Re: Solar Storm heading for Earth - 9th Mar 2012 9:50pm
Don't think the bright moon is helping matters, Bandy. It'll probably bleach out the Northern Lights.

Well worth looking out for though.

Had another look lat night, zilch. According to reports this activity is going be sporadic for the next couple of years so eventully we might touch lucky, it's well recommended.
