A father has been arrested after a suspected intruder was stabbed to death at a house in Bramhall, according to Greater Manchester Police.
Officers were called to Midland Road, Bramhall, following reports intruders had forced their way into a home shortly after 7.50pm on Saturday.

Police found a man, thought to be in his late 30s, with knife injuries.

He was given first aid by paramedics and officers but died a short time afterwards.

It is believed two men had entered the house and threatened the occupant, a 39-year-old man, a police statement said.

The occupant was home alone at the time but his wife and 12-year-old son, who returned during the incident, were able to escape unharmed.

A second offender fled the scene and it is believed he may have driven off in a white Citroen van, registration MM02 XEY, which was parked nearby on Chinley Close.

Detectives are urgently trying to trace this vehicle. The wanted man is described as being 6ft and of large build.

The 39-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and was being questioned by officers.

Chief Superintendent Tim Forber said: "Clearly this is a serious incident in which a man has lost his life and at this time we believe the dead man was one of two men who were attempting to carry out a burglary at the house.

"We have a team of detectives carrying out a thorough investigation and we will use all the resources available to us to establish the full facts of what has happened."

The officer appealed for information about those involved in the burglary and the whereabouts of the van.

Anyone with information can call police on 0161 856 2031 or contact independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Its worrying to think that people might start staging murders....
If an intruder enters your home without an invite then your first instinct is to protect your family.

But by the looks he stabbed the guy before his family returned, reguardless this isnt my point. Im saying its a worrying thing that as long as some one is in your house you are allowed to kill them, I can see it getting abused.

Ah I get ya, yes suppose this could be open to abuse really, like get someone you don't like to call round your house then kill them and say they had broken in!

I was on a Risk Awareness course with work last week and this topic came up. The law is a little grey in this area. You're allowed to use reasonable defence if you or your family are threatened.
If it goes to court, the judge and jury have to decide what constitutes reasonable. If someone comes at you with a machete screaming then you may have to disarm them and use it against them. Perfectly reasonable. However, if a burgular runs away from you, you chase them, catch them up then beat the living shite out of them then that's not reasonable force.
An ex-bodyguard on the course said he look at self defence this way - "you're allowed to win 1-0, not 5-0".

totally agree,,not to mention protect himself!! Sure the intruders didn't go in empty handed (weapon free) so at the end of the day, all i can say is the other thieving gitt who got away was very lucky, hopefully get caught very soon, before he tries it again & ruins another family's life!!
I think it was cleared up a bit more recently, iirc if an intruder continues to approach you after you tell him to "go away please dear", then you are allowed to presume malicious intent to harm you which basically means you are allowed to fully incapacitate him, after it is clear that you have incapacitated him or he starts to exit, if you continue to assault his body then you are using force beyond that which is considered reasonable.

If a person is clearly charging at you then it shortcuts the need to ask/tell him to leave due to the time constraints.

I'll try and dig up the references if I can but it was embroiled in the recent riots so difficult to search through the plethora of information.

Guess we need to resurrect "Lieutenant Columbo" to sort the real from the phony self defence claims.

Flowing tributes left at the site, the mind boggles. Not one complimented him on his skill as a serial burglar and thug though.

A householder arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of an intruder at his home has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

It is the third time in Greater Manchester in recent months that self-defence has been deemed acceptable after a suspected intruder has been killed.
