The football world is mourning the death of former England manager Sir Bobby Robson, who has died at the age of 76.

He was regarded as one of the game's finest and most charismatic coaches, with a managerial CV as impressive as any in the game.

Ray Wilkins, who played under Sir Bobby for England, told Sky News he was "absolutely devastated".

"He was an absolute gentlemen. You don't come across people like Bobby very often.

"He lived his life with humility."

He was wheeled around Newcastle football ground last week looking extremely ill, however, the news or anyone else didn't cover it.
Obviously it's bad news, but the way the media goes ballistic when someone dies and there's nothing else to report on. They didn't care about his illness.

Sir Bobby's widow 'overwhelmed'


Sir Bobby Robson's widow has visited the shrine at Newcastle United's St James' Park stadium to acknowledge the public grief over his loss.

Accompanied by two of her sons, Andrew, 50, and Paul, 52, and family friends, Lady Elsie Robson walked to the Sir John Hall Stand to see the flags, scarves, banners and flowers left there by fans.

Fans broke into a round of applause as, wearing a black blouse and dark sunglasses, she paused to read messages left for Sir Bobby, who died on Friday.

A spokesman for the family said: "She is absolutely overwhelmed. There must have been thousands of people here and she is very grateful to everybody who has made extremely generous donations to his charity."

Newcastle United confirmed the stand at the north end of the stadium would remain open between 9am and 5pm daily

next week to allow more people to pay their respects. A club source estimated that about 50,000 well-wishers had visited the ground since Sir Bobby's death at the age of 76.

Four books of condolence have been filled and a further six are close to being filled, he said.

Sir Bobby's son Andrew said his father would have been touched and surprised by the way people had reacted to his death.

Speaking from beside the Milburn Stand dugout, where Sir Bobby once sat as manager of Newcastle United, Mr Robson said his father would be remembered as a great football manager and for his charity work in the north-east.

He said the family was bearing up well, but had still been shocked by Sir Bobby's death.

He said: "As a family we are overwhelmed - really, really overwhelmed - and so pleased to be able to come here and see the [Leazes] End, and all the people milling about. It is very touching. I am sure he would have been very, very appreciative, but I think he would have been overwhelmed and would have wondered where all these people have come from. We really have been surprised by the depth of feeling in some of the reporting. I think it is a fitting tribute to my father."
