Arsenal fan hangs himself after they lose in semis - 7th May 2009 1:37pm
Nairobi - A Kenyan Arsenal fan was found dead on Wednesday in an apparent suicide triggered by his team's loss to Manchester United in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final. Suleiman Omondi, 29, was found hanged in his home in Nairobi's Pipeline estate on Wednesday morning, still wearing his Arsenal shirt, the Daily Nation reported.
Omondi watched the match in a bar near his home and had been drinking, witnesses said.
He grappled with a Manchester United fan who had taunted him and broke down in tears as Arsenal headed out of the competition.
"Tears flowed down his cheeks at half time but I patted him, telling him to remain strong because things could change before the final whistle," Timothy Kukali, another Arsenal fan who knew the deceased, told the Daily Nation.
"But he got angry after a young man, who was seated at the next table started mocking him," he added. "He rose and grabbed him by the neck and we had to rescue him."
Arsenal lost 3-1 at home to Manchester United, going out 4-1 on aggregate.
The English Premier League is massive in Kenya, with thousands fanatically following Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea in particular.
