TESCO triggered a new war at the petrol pumps last night after slashing prices by 3p a litre.
The supermarket giant introduced the reduction to petrol and diesel at the company’s 430 filling stations.
Unleaded was reduced to between 82.9p and 85.9p depending on the area.
Commercial director Richard Brasher said: “There will be lots of people waking up on New Year’s Day worrying about what 2009 means for their finances and for many the costs of motoring will be a significant factor.”
Other retailers were expected to hit back today with cuts of their own.
