Kicking Gordon Brown out of Number 10 would not save the Government from electoral meltdown, a poll has suggested.

Barely one in seven people believes Mr Brown is fit for the job of Prime Minister, according to research for The Daily Telegraph.

But neither Foreign Secretary David Miliband nor any of his other likely replacements would fare better with voters, the survey indicated.

Most thought bringing back Tony Blair could make Labour slightly more popular - but even the former prime minister would lose to Tory leader David Cameron.

The research highlights the dilemma facing the Government amid fevered speculation over whether Mr Brown should be forced out.

Poll Findings:
With Mr Brown as leader, only 25% said they would vote Labour, compared with 47% for the Tories - giving Mr Cameron (pictured) a huge majority.
With Mr Miliband in the top job, Labour support drops to 24%.
Under Justice Secretary Jack Straw, 24%-45%.
Under Schools Secretary Ed Balls, 17%.
With Mr Blair at the helm, 32% to the Tories' 41%.

Two Labour MPs went public with calls for Mr Miliband to be sacked on Thursday, after he failed to quell speculation that he is planning a challenge to the PM.

Although Mr Miliband insisted in a radio interview that he is not running a campaign for the leadership, he stopped well short of killing off the Westminster rumours about his intentions.

He denied it was disloyal to publish an article in The Guardian calling for "radical change" in Labour's approach while failing to make a single mention of the embattled Prime Minister.

The article sparked a rash of anonymous attacks in the press, which quoted unnamed allies of Mr Brown branding the Foreign Secretary "disgraceful" and "disloyal".

Serial rebel Bob Marshall-Andrews later went public with his criticism, accusing Mr Miliband of "pretty contemptible politics" and branding his behaviour "duplicitous".

In the wake of Mr Miliband's article, published a few days after Labour's humiliation in the Glasgow East by-election, bookmakers cut the odds on Mr Brown being ousted before the end of the year.

But the Telegraph's poll found that no Cabinet minister would be able to boost Labour's ratings if they took over from Mr Brown.

The sooner Brown goes the better - surely no-one can do anyworse!! I just dont understand why he hasnt realised what a crap job he is actually doing.... frown

The prospect of a return to power by the Tories under 'call me' Dave Cameron doesn't inspire much confidence with me. I remember the 80's.

Don't want Tories in at all, they destroyed the country in the world standing - they are the reason we have no industry whatsoever today.
Want a better leader in a Lbaour Government who hasn't just sold out to introducing taxes in exchange for an unfulfilled promise, and every decisions being made in Whitehall. Tony Blair lied through his teeth and wouldn't resign because he wanted to be the longest standing prime-minister on record. That's a terrible thing to do. What a complete arsehole. Brown wasn't voted in, he's incompetent.
