TOWER Road in Birkenhead will be closed to motorists for a week while urgent repairs to the "A" Bridge are carried out.

The closure, beginning on Saturday, February 15, is necessary after a steel plate on the bridge deck became loose since resurfacing work.

The resurfacing saw the road closed for around 16 weeks in 2012, causing traffic chaos in Birkenhead as HGVs heading to and from the Four Bridges were forced to take diversions through the town.

Tower Road will be closed from its junction with Dock Road and Birkenhead Road along to the Twelve Quays ferry terminal access.

A council spokesman said: "Unfortunately due the age of the bridges, work like this cannot be avoided.

"However it is being undertaken during half-term to minimise disruption as far as possible.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and we will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum."

And that combined with the "improvements" to the junction of the Dock Road and Kelvin Road, just by the A bridge, is going to make a bad situation worse.

How they can narrow the road to one lane and call that an improvement is beyond me. They're had several goes at the roundabout just before the A bridge and STILL haven't got it right.

Wirral BC Highways, the most incompetent council department in the country.

And don't get me started on potholes!

It's not only that Ste, there are massive potholes everywhere and they're wasting money "improving" a junction that had nothing wrong with it in the first place.

Why not fix all the potholes first?

I was driving down Martins Lane the other night, I have never seen a road like that, it's like an assault course.

I drove down that road this morning, they've made the extended pavement a cycle lane and put back the 2 lanes now so people can turn right and not annoy us lot trying to use the bridge when it's not under going work or going up at peak times.

it is causing murder on the roads
corporation, cleveland and price st are now a nuisance to drive at rush hour
many are heading to the penny bridge and the new brighton flyover to dodge this
it is amazing to realise how much chaos this 1 road closure is causing

I was pleased the bridge was open again thought I'd try that way seeing as it hadn't come up on the roadsigns.
