More than 500 cannabis plants worth £550,000 were seized in a police raid on a Wirral pub.

Police confirmed 550 plants worth £1,000 each and with a possible £2m annual yield were discovered in what appeared to be a "sophisticated set-up" on the top floor of the Pensby Hotel.

Three men aged 25, 26 and 27 years, from the Pensby area, and a 52-year-old from Irby were arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis.

They are being questioned by police after the plants were recovered on Monday evening.

Merseyside Police's Cannabis Dismantling Team (CDT) remain at the pub.

The Pensby Hotel was saved last year after a community campaign led to the withdrawal of plans to redevelop it as a care home for the elderly.

The discovery marks the force's latest success in the clampdown on cannabis farms.

More than 2,000 cannabis plants were recently seized from the former Chucky’s Bar on Rice Lane – described by police as one of the biggest farms ever found in Merseyside.

PMSL

Do these people seriously think they will get away with cultivating cannabis in this day and age?

Honestly some people no

Do they not realise that the energy companies are also watching them and reporting to the government?

Eyes are everywhere, you will get caught so why bother?

Get a real job like us hard working folk.

lmao. L

A kick in the teeth for all those in the local community who campaigned to save this pub.
