Firefighters tackle huge pallet fire off Liverpool's Dock Road
Apr 7 2013 by John Siddle, Liverpool Echo
A HUGE blaze swept through a pallet yard sending thick smoke billowing over the River Mersey.
The spectacular fire engulfed wooden pallets in an open-air unit on Saltney Street, off Regent Road, before then spreading to a nearby tyre company.
The cause of the fire, which started at around 9.30pm, was not yet known. An investigation will look at whether it was started deliberately.
An 800m-long cordon was put in place between Walter Street and Cotton Street, encompassing the disused former heritage market and converted warehouse apartments.

Eight fire engines, an aerial appliance and a high-volume pump – which took water from the Mersey to douse the flames – were in attendance.
The first fire crews found an area measuring 50m by 50m containing wooden pallets well alight. As of midnight, the fire was still not under control.
The ECHO understands that the yard was operated by Liverpool firm M&T Pallets. The neighbouring tyre firm is called Just Tyres.
Merseyside fire service said it received a number of calls from the public raising the alarm.
There were eight fire engines in attendance tonight, including appliances from Crosby, Kirkdale, Kensington and Wallasey.
